The Fresh Food Bus Is Back This Weekend

A farmers market that says it wants to serve lower-income people is all well and good, but words are just words if they can’t actually get there.

Last year, the Athens Farmers Market worked with on- and off-campus partners (Wholesome Wave Georgia, Athens Community Council on Aging and the UGA Office of Sustainability) to add the Fresh Food Bus, a public transit route that brought riders to the Saturday-morning AFM at no cost to them.

This Saturday, May 21, it starts up again, running through Dec. 17 and hitting a completely new route of 22 stops three times from 7:40 a.m. until the market closes at noon. That means it’s running one less time than it did last year but hitting more stops and different ones from last year, when it concentrated heavily on the UGA campus (the Multimodal Transit Center and AFM were the only off-campus stops). This year, the focus is much more on low-income areas and customers who need the transportation.

The route runs in a loop from Athens Community Council on Aging (Hoyt Street) to Denney Tower (Dougherty Street), Hotel Indigo, Willow at North, the Multimodal Transit Center, Nellie B Avenue at Fairview Street, Cone at Zebulon, Carver Drive at Zatella Lane, Ag Drive at Hardin Drive (UGA Family Housing Building G), Five Points (by The Pine), Soule Hall, Baxter at Newton, Clarke Central High School, Rocksprings Street at Rocksprings Court, West Broad at Minor, the H.T. Edwards Building (Dearing Extension), Baxter (in front of Moe’s), Columbia Brookside (Hawthorne), AFM, Young Harris Church and Daily Groceries.

Look for the “We Heart Farmers” sign at bus stops. Return trips start at 8:45 a.m. The route is posted at athensfarmersmarket.net/freshfoodbus.
