Cave, Shade, Mqqeen

Taking cues from krautrock, vintage psychedelia, world music and zonked fusion, Chicago quintet Cave is on a constant search for the Ultimate Heady Groove. The group comes as close as ever on Allways, its sixth full-length, out Oct. 19 via Drag City. The new record is Cave’s most focused to date, the band having veered away from screamin’ psych wildness and towards a repetitive, blissed-out approach. Member Cooper Crain has earned underground acclaim for his side project Bitchin Bajas, which is similarly dedicated to mind expansion. Cave hits Athens for a Sunday-night gig with local support from crusty groovers Shade and Mqqeen, a new project featuring members of Shade and Fart Jar.
