Machinal

Sophie Treadwell’s play Machinal follows a young woman (played by Eva Ramirez) who leads a life shaped by societal conformity and restricted by a loveless marriage to her boss (John Buisman). After an affair with an adventurous free spirit (Jordan Richards), she becomes determined to get the life she wants by any means necessary. Inspired by the real-life story of Ruth Snyder, who was executed by electric chair for murdering her husband, the play reflects shifting social structures in America during the 1920s. Presented by University Theatre and directed by Marla Carlson, the production seeks to humanize the protagonist, while emphasizing expressionist dance and treating the script as a musical score.
