‘Some Like it Hot’

Local artist Susie Burch will show a new body of work in a solo exhibition, “Some Like It Hot—Succulents and Cacti.” Inspired by a recent trip, Burch used watercolor on Aquaboard to render close-up views of native Southwestern plants, focusing on natural variations in color and unusual elements like spikes, textural patterns and flowers. Burch is drawn to the resilient beauty of the plants and the poetic unpredictability of watercolor, a medium in which colors can run freely into one another. The soft, translucent qualities of watercolor provide energetic contrast to the sharper elements of the plants and create dynamic compositions of form and color. The work will be on view through October.
