The space next door to Independent Baking Co. in Five Points that was Cinco y Diez (and, before that, Five & Ten) is now LRG Provisions, a place for Last Resort Grill to operate catering out of and do pop-up dinners. Melissa Clegg, who owns Last Resort, was also a co-owner of Cinco. Dinners will be held on Thursdays from 5–10 p.m. in the space (you can make reservations by calling 706-850-2020 or walk up). Champy's Famous Fried Chicken, a small chain out of Chattanooga, will be opening its fifth location in Athens, on Baxter Street, across from the library, in the building that most recently housed Off the Hook Steak and Seafood. It's shooting to be open around March.
The Coffee Shop of Athens, which was pouring Jittery Joe's out of Heyward Allen Toyota, will be closing, according to one of Flagpole's delivery drivers.
Sal Speights of Heirloom Cafe is doing a Latin-inspired pop-up dinner at The Old Pal, in Normaltown, at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8. The menu consists of: fanesca (salt cod, plantain spaetzle, smoked fish skin, jalapeno, cornnuts, hard-boiled egg); a tamale made with raisins, olives, brown butter, pomegranate, pickled mushroom and pique verde boricua; and cochinita pibil (a slow-roasted pork dish), plus horchata cream pies for dessert.
Per usual, The National is doing a Hannukah dinner, this year on Dec. 21 and 22. The prix-fixe menu is $32 per person and includes your choice of matzoh ball soup or potato-apple latkes for your app, chicken roulade or brisket for your entree and apple fritters or cream cheese kugel with cherries for dessert.
