Here’s what’s new in Athens this week:
THE DANCE OF REALITY (unrated; showtimes): Take a bold leap and submit yourself to the latest from legendary cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, his first film in 23 years. If you love El Topo, Holy Mountain or dreamed of his Dune, The Dance of Reality is for you.
THE EQUALIZER (R; showtimes): At the multiplexes, Denzel Washington replaces Edward Woodward in the big screen update of the ’80s TV show. The action flick reunites Denzel with his Training Day director, Antoine Fuqua.
THE BOXTROLLS (PG; showtimes): Looking for a movie for the kiddies? The Boxtrolls is from the stop-motion animation house Laika; they previously gave us Coraline and Paranorman. Listen closely for some terrific British voicework from Ben Kingsley, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Richard Ayoade.
OTHER OPTIONS: For laughs, check out 22 Jump Street at Tate. We’re almost through the September cinematic dead zone. Next up is October’s horror onslaught and David Fincher’s Gone Girl. I can’t wait.
