UGA and Other Institutions Have Too Much Sway in Athens

Michael Songster’s Comment (“Envision Athens May Be Doomed,” Dec. 14) was exactly on target. Our community isn’t properly represented when membership in important, influential committees is significantly comprised of representatives of UGA and other state institutions who have little concern for our community’s welfare unless they happen to coincide with their own. Even though their membership may represent a minority of the committees, they exert heavy influence which other members can find difficult to resist.

The determination of members is critically important and has to consider more than political, personal or business connections. The majority of the members should represent our community’s interests and should be fair-minded of all current and future impacts of even the smallest developments.

Mr. Songster, though I doubt he has any political ambition, would get my vote for mayor or commissioner.
