One of the most recognizable figures in contemporary Americana music thanks in part to her work on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, Gillian Welch returns to Athens as part of her “An Evening With” tour, which takes her across the South this month. Welch and longtime partner David Rawlings—the quietly virtuosic guitarist who released an underrated gem, Poor David’s Almanack, last year—will perform two full sets that draw primarily on Welch’s immaculate back catalog. Though the singer-songwriter hasn’t dropped a proper new record since 2011’s The Harrow & the Harvest, in 2016 she released Boots No 1: The Official Revival Bootleg, a compilation of demos and alternate versions of songs recorded for her 1996 debut.
