The Yawpers

Released in August via Bloodshot Records, Denver three-piece The Yawpers’ latest album, the Tommy Stinson-produced Boy in a Well, is a rollicking, 12-song concept album about an abandoned newborn in World War I-era France. Regardless of the record’s serpentine narrative—there’s even an accompanying graphic novel, should you wish to really dive in—the music is immediate and engaging, from the riotous freakabilly of “A Decision Is Made” to the barebones folk of “God’s Mercy.” It helps that frontman Nate Cook boasts a once-in-a-generation rock and roll singing voice that can careen from sweet to snarling in a few short seconds.
