Avid Bookshop and the University of Georgia Press are teaming up with Georgia Public Broadcasting and National Endowment for the Humanities affiliate Georgia Humanities to launch a "virtual book club" called Georgia Reads. And they're launching it in the coolest possible way for us Athens music history buffs.
This Saturday, Mar. 18 from 6:30–8:30 p.m., local recording engineer and director of the UGA Music Business Program David Barbe will do a live interview with author Rodger Lyle Brown, Pylon singer Vanessa Briscoe Hay and others at Avid's Prince Avenue store.
The inaugural title for the series is Brown's 1991 book, Party Out of Bounds: The B-52s, R.E.M. and the Kids Who Rocked Athens, Georgia. After an initial popular run, the book drifted in and out of print—and, thus, availability—until returning to its full glory via UGA Press' 25th anniversary edition published last year.
This event is free, open to the public and thoughtfully scheduled in the late afternoon/early evening for all the kids who still rock Athens, GA and and will likely have only rolled out of bed a couple of hours earlier.
