Where to Buy or Eat Your Thanksgiving Dinner in Athens

ORDER ALL OF THE PIES

One thing you can be thankful for in Athens is that we have many, many local restaurants more than willing to cook some delicious food for your Thanksgiving dinner in exchange for your dollars (and, in one case, not even for that). Here’s the list of what we know: how to order, what the deadlines are, whether they’re offering turkey or just sides and so on. We'll update it as info comes in.

Allgood Lounge is once again doing a Thanksgiving potluck on the day itself. It’ll be open sometime around 6 or 7 p.m.

Big City Bread has sweets that require 72 hours’ notice through the end of the year, which you can order by calling 706-353-0029: apple and cranberry rustic tart ($25), pear almond frangipane tart ($25), chocolate pecan pie ($25), Linzer torte ($25), holiday spice cake ($40), apple bread ($14), chocolate cherry bread ($6.75), stollen ($13), cookies, sampler trays and much more. Also, pull-apart rolls ($4.25 for seven) and brioche ($6.25).

Big Daddy Mike’s is doing a full holiday dinner through the end of the year, each item of which serves 10 people: smoked turkey breast (traditional, honey, barbecue), Boston butt with choice of sauce or honey-smoked ham, $45 each; cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, sweet potato souffle, $15 each; cranberry sauce, $12; pecan pie, $20; red velvet cake, $35; vanilla cake, $30; and Oreo truffles, $25. Butt Hutt is doing smoked turkeys for $45. Call 706-850-8511.

Donderos’ Kitchen is doing a large array of stuff, including roasted whole turkey (10, 14, 18 or 22 pounds for $4.95/pound), herb-roasted duck with orange sauce (4 pounds, $28.50), sides at $11 to feed two to four people or $24 to feed eight to 12 (herbed dressing with sausage or pecans, gluten-free veggie portobello cornbread dressing, pecan-baked sweet potatoes, green bean casserole), mashed potatoes ($13/quart), rutabagas ($13/quart), red cabbage with apple ($13/quart), creamed brussels sprouts ($15/quart), red wine gravy ($8/pint; $15/quart), cranberry sauce ($8/pint; $15/quart), six rolls from Independent Baking Co. Five Bar is doing its third annual Thanksgiving Charity Feast on the day itself from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. The meal itself is free and open to the public (first come, first served), although donations are accepted, and 100 percent of them will be directed to Project Safe. The restaurant is also asking for front-of-house volunteers.

Graduate Athens is doing a Thanksgiving buffet from 11:30 a.m.–3 p.m. day of, with a carving station, hot line, salads and desserts. Grown-ups are $29.50, kids 5–12 are $14.75, and those under 5 are free. Call 706-549-7020 or visit thefoundryathens.com to book seatings.

Heirloom Cafe has sides that serve three to four people (green bean casserole for $13, root vegetable hash for $14, sweet potato soufflé with pecan crumble for $12, cornbread, apple and chorizo stuffing for $13, southern-style braised greens for $8, turkey gravy for $6/pint, cranberry orange relish for $7/pint) and desserts (apple pie with oatmeal streusel, salted caramel pecan pie and sweet potato pie with maple meringue, $28 each). It’s also hosting the annual pre-Thanksgiving Athens Farmers Market on Nov. 23 from 11 a.m.–2 p.m.

home.made is doing sides at $15 to serve four or $30 to serve eight: tomato pie with savory crust, basil, parmesan, cheddar and ricotta; Sorvas salad (shaved brussels sprouts and kale with mustard vinaigrette, toasted pecans and dried cranberries); sweet potato gratin with celery cream and brown butter breadcrumbs; roasted fall vegetables with fresh herbs and pecans; and mac and cheese with brown-butter breadcrumbs. You can also get cranberry pepper jelly ($5/8 ounces), ready-to-bake Sister Schubert yeast rolls ($4 per dozen) and two kinds of desserts at $22 each (pumpkin icebox pie and north Georgia caramel apple upside-down cake). Kiki's Bakeshop has pies (golden apple, rhubarb, pumpkin, sweet potato, bourbon pecan,  chocolate pecan and cranberry crumb; the first three can be made gluten-free) for $15.99, cakes (pumpkin cheesescake, carrot cake and flourless chocolate cake, the latter being gluten-free) for $29.99 each and breads (yeast rolls, buttermilk biscuits, sweet potato biscuits and cheese biscuits) for $8.95/dozen. Lindsey’s Culinary Market has the full meal, mostly priced per person: roasted turkey for $5/pound, gravy for $14.50/quart, sourdough and cornbread dressing for $4.25, garlic and chive mashed potatoes for $3.75, sweet potato casserole with pecans and mini-marshmallows for $3.75, squash casserole for $3.75, corn pudding for $3.75, “Not Your Mama’s Green Bean Casserole” for $3.75 and cranberry-orange compote for $9/pound. Mama Jewel’s Kitchen is doing casseroles (serve 12-14) and sides with 48 hours’ notice. You can even pick them up hot if you want. Your options are: sweet potato soufflé for $35.95, squash casserole for $32.95, corn casserole for $36.95, mac and cheese for $36.95, cornbread dressing for $29.95, scalloped potatoes for $39.95, green bean casserole for $36.95, broccoli rice casserole for $32.95, collard greens for $8/pint or $16/quart and ambrosia for $12/pint or $24/quart. Marti’s at Midday is doing sides: Grammy Schimmel's cornbread dressing, fresh green beans with shallots and pecans, squash casserole, smashed sweet potatoes with brown sugar and cinnamon and roasted brussels sprouts with bacon and caramelized onions. Small is $32 and serves four to six; large is $64 and serves 10 to 12. Order by Nov. 18 to pick up either Nov. 22 or the morning of Nov. 23. Opa Robby's is done taking turkey orders but is running a class on how to make an elaborate cornucopia-themed centerpiece out of bread on Nov. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. ($25; email oparobbysmarket@gmail.com to register). It also has Thanksgiving-themed baskets for order by 11 p.m. Nov. 16 (for pick-up no later than Nov. 23). All the details on what they include and how to order can be found here.

Pulaski Heights BBQ is doing all its regular menu items but also adding smoked turkeys (12–14 pounds) and hams (5–6 pounds) for $65 each or doing a full dinner for eight to 12 people at $120 that includes a turkey or a ham, cranberry sauce, cornbread dressing and choice of two sides. Order at 706-583-9600 and pick up no later than Thanksgiving Day between 11 a.m. and noon.

Redfearn Grille at the Holiday Inn downtown has a buffet on the day of from 11 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Make reservations at 706-549-4433, ext. 6419.

Saucehouse is doing smoked turkey or spiral-sliced ham for $65 (feeds eight to 12) or, for $12 per person, turkey or ham plus stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, two sides (chosen from mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, green bean casserole and sweet potato casserole) and Sister Schubert’s dinner rolls (minimum of 12 people; add peach cobbler or pumpkin pie for $2 per person).
