Avid Bookshop Has Three Food Book Events Coming Up, Starting Saturday

Hopefully not buried among the many things Avid Bookshop has going on tomorrow (Saturday, Apr. 29) for Independent Bookstore Day—which include local art for sale, free Ike & Jane doughnuts at the Prince Avenue location, free Independent Baking Co. pastries at the Five Points location, face painting, sidewalk chalk and poetry readings—is a meet-and-greet and book signing with Mary Kay Andrews for her brand-new The Beach House Cookbook. That's at the Prince Avid, starting at 11 a.m. and going until noon. Andrews is better known for her novels, but she also likes to cook—hence, the book.

Coming up on May 18 at 6:30 p.m., the Prince Avid will host Matt Moore for a signing of his book The South’s Best Butts: Pitmaster Secrets for Southern Barbecue Perfection. Once a local, as a UGA student, Moore now lives in Nashville, but you might remember his name from this city guide that ran on Life & Thyme last year. This is his third (and least gentlemanly?) cookbook, following on Have Her Over for Dinner: A Gentleman's Guide to Classic Simple Meals and A Southern Gentleman's Kitchen.

A few days later, on May 21 at 3 p.m., John T. Edge, who teaches in the MFA in narrative nonfiction program at UGA as well as directing Ole Miss' Southern Foodways Alliance, will sign his new book The Potlikker Papers: A Food History of the Modern South, again at the Prince Avid.
