Music News and Gossip

Nothing ever slows down in the music world. The world keeps turning and the news keeps churning and Proud Mary keeps on burning. For those just now waking up to the New Year see below. I've made your plans for you.

In The Lab With A Pen And A Pad: Heros Severum

frontman Eric Friar informed Flagpole that the band has secured the much-coveted opening slot for Mission Of Burma at Atlanta's Echo Lounge. Contrary to earlier reports, the show will take place on February 20, not January 20. Friar also kicked down the news that the studio over at Skylab Audio is cranking out bands as fast as they can get there. Engineers Asa Leffer and J. Burton just finished recording tracks by Carrie Nations (which have already been released), Three O'Clock Sandbox and Urbosleeks. Friar himself is working on a 34-song album for Atlanta band Sharks and Minnows and is also doing an album for the frontman of Luminous, Eric Harris. Good thing Friar isn't paying by the pound for all this. He's got the fullest plate I've seen in months.

The Only Real Thing To Hit MTV In Years: Rumor has it that during a recent episode of MTV's "Real World" approximately 30 seconds of the song "The Fortress" by The Glands was played in the background. While this is surely a coup for the band and represents an upward turn in the taste of the show's producers, it's pretty safe to say that when the characters on a show can't even make dinner without acting like it's an act of Congress, they should leave their glands alone.

Tutupi For Everyone: Athens musician and member of the Rhino Five Interdependent Collective, Bain Mattox, has some good news from his camp. His band, Tutupi, has just signed a management deal with Sixthman from Atlanta. Apparently they have put the band right to work by way of getting it on tour with Sister Hazel for the first few months of '03. Good luck to all involved and concerned and send us postcards.

If You're Dissin' Grandma, You Ain't Fightin' The Power: No Limit Records CEO and quickly falling star Master P has been ordered to pay a Pomona, California grandmother damages for using her voice surreptitiously on records he released via his label. The woman, 80-year-old Geneva Burger, was secretly recorded during a phone call she made to her grandson's friend back in 1997 and a sample of this recording has been used on the album Sky's The Limit by rapper Magic. The album was released in 1998 via the Tru Records imprint, which is distributed by No Limit. People, Grandma may be funny and she may say some strange things on the phone, but she will sue your dumb ass sure as anything. Girls gotta get paid, holmes.

Mall Punks Of The World, Unite And Take Over: If any Athens area loud rock or punk bands want to play to a sea of sweaty adolescent boys and teenage girls in Hot Topic half-shirts, this is your chance. Alternative Press Magazine is having a contest for bands in which winning bands will get to travel throughout one region of the USA and perform on the main stage at this years Warped Tour. Details can be had at altpress.com. Contrary to rumor, you don't need a note from your mom to enter the contest.

Blessed Be, Blessed Be: In an announcement that will thrill so many music fans, Minneapolis natives The Jayhawks have declared that they will indeed release an album of new material in April of this year. The album, entitled Rainy Day Songs, is the first release the band has had since the 2000 release Smile. According to guitarist/songwriter/vocalist Gary Louris this new record will be "the most acoustic based, stripped down, and live record the Jayhawks have ever made." The band has booked a smattering of tour dates to support the record, however, at press time the closest to Athens they will come is Charleston, SC on February 2.

The Great White North Border Patrol: Even though they'll let anyone and their brother into the USA, Canadian officials refused recently to allow rapper DMX into the country for scheduled performances in Saskatoon and Calgary. The hip hop star, whose real name is Earl Simmons, wasn't even allowed to disembark his flight when it landed. However, six members of his entourage were allowed to enter the country. Although officials refused to give the press a reason for this treatment of Simmons, it appears to have been caused by his extensive arrest record in the States. Either that or Canada was just jealous that the USA exports more talent than they could ever dream of.

Do You Remember Rock-N-Roll Radio?: Longtime San Francisco magazine Maximum Rock-n-Roll has launched their new website. At first this might not be of much interest to the casual music fan, given MRR's notoriously strident opinions as to what constitutes "punk rock" and what doesn't, the website gives fans a real treat in the form of its streaming audio files. Before MRR was a magazine it was a radio show that catered to the very best of the underground punk and hardcore scene worldwide and was syndicated to college radio via cassette tape. The show is still going strong and is now available in crystal clear files at maximumrocknroll.com. Even if you hate the magazine, the radio show is practically indispensable when it comes to discovering new bands from all corners of the globe.

Spazticus Among Us: Spoken word "artist," actor, and writer (and onetime respected musician) Henry Rollins

just announced a 50-date spoken word tour that will bring him to Atlanta's Variety Playhouse on February 13. He has apparently just released a DVD/CD package entitled I Am Spazticus that's release is tied to the tour. It's amazing he can find time to get the word out to his public with all that hard work hosting TLC's "Full Metal Challenge." (If you don't know, check it out...) [SL]

That's all for this week. Keep it coming. I gotcha back. Get jiggy with it via email to music@flagpole.com, voicemail at 549-2360; via fax at 548-8981; or by post at P.O. Box 1027, Athens, GA 30603.
