Music News And Gossip

Okay, gang, Happy New Year and all that. Welcome to another year of insights built to incite and news meant to abuse. Hopefully all of you're well on your way to fulfilling any resolutions you may have made. But if not, continue reading below...

They've Got to Have A Macha, Macha Man: Athens band Paper Lions, which has been propelling skyward ever since its inception, will be heading into Epi-1: Ecosystem studio in Winterville to record a new four-song demo this month.

The production and engineering will be handled by Josh McKay (Macha, Tenderness) and it'll be interesting to see what the results will be. Word is that three of the tracks will be released on a split 12" with I Am The World Trade Center and one will even feature IATWTC vocalist Amy Dykes. Expect to hear the new material when Paper Lions, The Features and The Whigs shake up the fabulous 40 Watt on Saturday, Jan. 10. Beyond this news, Paper Lions are currently shopping for a new label and anyone out there should know by now that the band would be a hell of a catch. For more information and other junk, please see www.paperlions.com.

"Artistic Differences" Anyone?: Word has come down that as of December 18, the Drive-By Truckers' bass-playing duties will be filled by Shonna Isbell, wife of singer/guitarist Jason Isbell. Bandleader Patterson Hood says of Shonna, "We all look forward to working with her, both live and in the studio." Isbell, a veteran of both live performing and of Muscle Shoals studio session work, takes over the position left vacant by former bass player Earl Hicks. While a vague, polite press release was issued in regard to Hicks' departure (in which the band "...wish[es] him nothing but the best in the world") it all still sounds slightly odd. But who knows? I'm not trying to start nothing here, honest. Just reporting. For more info, if there's any to be had, head to www.drivebytruckers.com.

It Means "Pirate" In French, I Swear: Atlanta band Corsair is gearing up to shake your foundations. The band is set to release the album Doctors and Captains on its own imprint later this month. Corsair recorded the album this past November; engineer Brent Spann of Atik Media fingered the knobs. Doctors and Captains will be available (by the end of the month at the latest, according to the band's management) via all the usual local records stores as well as CDBaby and CDNow on the web. Best described as "Police-influenced modern racket" with an XTC fetish, the band is carving inroads in the Athens scene (albeit slowly) with a recent appearance at the Engine Room. Unfortunately, the band's live schedule is blank until March, but listen for appearances on local radio in the coming weeks. For more information please see www.corsairband.com.

And I Thought All They Did Was Smoke Cloves: A cool exhibition will open at the Savannah College of Art and Design this month. Sponsored by the Georgia Music Hall Of Fame, "We Hear You, Georgia" will feature artwork "celebrating the musicians, inductees and songs that have contributed to the music of Georgia." Pieces range from portraits of Georgia musicians to artistic renderings of lyrics, etc. All work was done by SCAD students and musicians represented run the gamut from Gladys Knight and Johnny Mercer to Outkast and Ma Rainey. The big news for Athens music fans is that the ever-lovin' B-52's will be playing a reception for the show on January 23 at SCAD's Trustees Theater. Tickets range from $30 to $40 and can be had by calling (912) 525-5050. For more information please see www.gamusichall.com.

Merry Dodd-mas to All: Ferrelle Central has dropped a line reporting that Dodd Ferrelle & The Tinfoil Stars spent the week before Christmas in the studio with David Barbe over at his Chase Park Transduction studio. The next full-length album from the roots-rock group should be finished up in February to ready it for a late spring release. In the meantime, Ferrelle will be up in New York come the middle of this month, selling his Southern wares to Manhattanites and Brooklyners alike. And for the second January 10 in a row, the Tinfoil Stars will perform in Black Mountain, NC. This is how traditions start, I suppose. [Chris Hassiotis]

Local Lyric For This Week: Well, the Athens landmark Allen's Hamburgers has passed into the history books.

I could make a list as long as my arm about places that have closed down since I moved here, but since I won't bore you with all that, let's say good-bye with the only appropriate lyric known to man for this situation. From the 1989 album Cosmic Thing, the aforementioned B-52's provide a classic line from "Deadbeat Club": "Going down to Allen's for a twenty-five cent beer/ And the jukebox playing real loud "Ninety-six tears"/ We're wild girls walkin' down the street, Wild girls and boys going out for a big time/ Let's go crash that party down/ In Normaltown tonight."

As always, guys, get your news in early and often and reference either me or Threats & Promises in the subject line of all emails. I'm gonna keep writing that until you get it right.
