Music News and Gossip

Well, while all you guys were on Spring Break auditioning for "Girls Gone Wild" or getting arrested, I've been back here in the lab compiling this week's news for all youse guys. You can thank me later. See below for the update ...

Gettin' Funky With All That Jazz: Funk/jazz band UltraSound has been causing trouble all over the place lately. The band has recently wowed crowds in Albany, GA, Winston-Salem and Boone, NC. Apparently they've been able to win over a whole slew of fans with their "funky jazz" which really should be described as something else, because "funky jazz" sounds gross and vaguely pornographic. But either way, the band will be coming back to Athens to play their hometown on April 5 at The Classic City Brew Fest, which'll be over at The Classic Center. Get the full menu at www.ultrasoundjazz.com.

No Parking Available... Anywhere: What stops more traffic than suburban commuters rushing to get back outside the Atlanta perimeter? Why, yes, its Music Midtown. The festival, promoted by mega-producers Peter Conlon and Alex Cooley, turns 10 years old this year and the lineup is just as eclectic as it has been in previous years. With acts including L.L. Cool J, Bob Dylan, Eve, Tony Bennett and Def Leppard, concert-goers may be hard-pressed to determine whether they're at a festival or a Time-Warner-sponsored acid trip, but most attendees seem to enjoy the annual event. Tickets are a mere $45 for the 3-day event; you can get one through a brain-wrecking experience with Ticketmaster. For more info on the event and a full lineup of acts, go visit www.musicmidtown.com.

Bring Me the Tar and Feathers: Ever wonder where pissants like the White Stripes place the blame for their existence? Well, look no further than Athens/North Carolina history-book legends The Flat Duo Jets. I received a copy of an email sent to Jets founder Dexter Romweber from White Stripes fashion disaster Jack White which says, "Let me first just say that you were a major influence on me ... I have all of your albums and learned to play every song on Go Go Harlem Baby when I was 19. I had another two piece band called Two Part Resin and we did covers about fifteen songs that The Flat Duo Jets did on that record, sort of the pre-precursor to the White Stripes." Poor Dex. The man has had enough trouble in his life without also having to carry the responsibility for the White Stripes' modern-rock tripe. Apparently, Mr. Romweber doesn't mind, as his new band The Dexter Romweber Duo will open some shows for the Stripes up north in the near future.

Turn to the Left, Turn to the Right: UGA student organization Aesthetic Impulse will host their annual three-day fashion, art and music event April 4-6. Venues hosting the event include Tasty World and the University Chapel. Tickets are available from the Tate Student Center ticket window (only for events on the second and third days, however) and The Junkman's Daughter's Brother (all three days) and cost $5. Even if you're not into the fashion-show aspects of this, which will feature designers from Athens, Atlanta and New York - attendees will be subjected to listen to the artists "describe their inspiration for their designs" (blech...) - you might be interested in the fact that the music will be provided by the hip hop collective Herb and Skills, which so far has been above reproach. Get more information by dropping an electronic line to a_impulse@hotmail.com or by calling 357-0978.

Well, Congratulations, Guys: Athens/Atlanta label Ghostmeat Records is celebrating its 9th anniversary this month. In addition to the AthFest CDs, which they've faithfully released each year of the festival's existence, Ghostmeat also has managed to release ground-floor recordings from folks who've earned quite a name for themselves over the years (Andy LeMaster, anyone?). The label's newest project is the debut record by Atlanta's Team Emu. The album will be released on Thursday, April 10, at the 9 Lives Saloon in Atlanta.

Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ: Look, I know it's a lot of fun to be a college radio DJ and hear your voice on the radio and all, but will someone please inform the crew over at UGA's 90.5 FM that irony is dead. Irony is not funny. Irony is not the new black. It's dead. My ire has been sparked by not only being subjected to regular-rotation drudgery in the form of Bright Eyes, Joan of Arc and The Sea and Cake in the past week alone (which I know was "break radio," as if that's an excuse), but my ears were also sonically pinched by the likes of Joe Cocker, Neil Diamond and Elton John. These records barely belong in someone's record collection, much less on college radio. Time for a new joke book, guys.

Alpha Delta, uh, Sigma, Rho?: Here's a quick one for you. So, I was flipping through the channels on the old picture box the other day, when I happened across MTV's "Sorority Life." Normally, I wouldn't think a thing about it, but there is something enthralling about watching these girls debase themselves through everyday activity. Anyway, someone was complaining about something, but all I could hear was the show's background music - dang if it wasn't Kindercore's own Maserati. Has anyone else heard this? [CH]

Speaking of Old Jokes: Former ground-breaker and pretty much full-time comedian Henry Rollins will perform a spoken word night at the fabulous 40 Watt Club on March 29 (Read all about it on p. 25). If you've never seen him do his storytelling, I cannot encourage you enough to go. The man is, quite simply, hilarious. He is self-deprecating without being a wimp about it and has a wit that'll crack up anyone. This is a true rarity from me: a full-on endorsement. Hell, sue me.

You know, I like mail, too. So if you've got an opinion on this Flagpole feature send it on. If you have no opinions then just moonwalk your news to me via email to music@flagpole.com, voicemail at 549-2360; via fax at 548-8981; or by post at P.O. Box 1027, Athens, GA 30603.
