Hope all of you are recovering from AthFest nicely and that things are fine with you and yours. Really. I mean it this time. At any rate, get in on the latest junk below...

Kick The Can: Well, what could have been about the coolest show at The Caledonia Lounge all summer has been canceled courtesy of our friends at the U.S. Customs office in Detroit, MI. The upcoming performance by Damo Suzuki, former member of Munich, Germany's legendary 1970's Krautrock-kickstarters Can, has been strangled in its crib because Suzuki failed to secure a proper work visa before landing in Detroit on June 12. While Suzuki admits this was clearly his fault, I must take issue with the way customs in both the U.S. and Canada have historically treated touring artists. Chicago improvisational troupe Defender was set to tour alongside Suzuki and, after mulling over whether to go it alone, have canceled their tour altogether. Here's to hoping things will work out in the end and as Suzuki himself said, "Keep your good vibes share to the one next to you."

Go West Young Man. And Bring Me Back A Lobster: Athens punk rock stalwarts Carrie Nations will see their latest tour taking them all the way to the Northern California this time around. Most notably is a gig slated for July 18 at Berkeley, CA landmark 924 Gilman. The collectively-run performance space, created by the late Tim Yohannon of punk rock bible Maximum Rock-N-Roll, has thrived since the late 1980s and has played host to several Athens bands over the years including Tres Kids, Space Cookie and Quadiliacha. In a related note: all-volunteer spaces are incredibly hard to maintain for a length of years, but if you're interested in helping create a space like this you may want to drop a note to the folks over at the newly formed Athens Not For Profit, who are looking for folks to help with such a project. Contact them at athensnotforprofit@hotmail.com.

By Next Year They'll All Be In The Mile High Club: I've said it before and I'll say it again. Athens has perhaps no better example of perseverance than local rock monsters Jet By Day. After years of poorly attended and shaky performances, these guys have not only turned themselves into one of the most spectacular live bands in town, but also a solid touring machine that is garnering support nationwide. At any rate, the big news from them is that there's finally an official, firm release date for their Kindercore Records debut Cascadia. Word is that the record will drop on September 23 and the band is gonna hit the road immediately afterward. On May 14 they found themselves in New York City shooting their first video for the track "This Quiet Hell" (which is available for free download at Jetbyday.com). People, I'm telling you, this band has everything it takes to be huge and it would do you good to catch them when there're in town.

In related news: Jet by Day lead macho man David Matysiak has been furiously working on a tribute record to the late Black Lips guitarist Ben Eberbaugh. So far, he has had no trouble securing tracks from Breakheart Beat, Rump Posse, The Carbonas, The Lids and The El Caminos. Of particular interest is a track by Some Soviet Station (listen up, you Paper Lions fanaticos!) which is apparently the last unreleased track by the band. There's also a demo track from(!) J Mascis & The Fog. This record will be distributed for free at a tribute show to Eberbaugh which is as yet unscheduled.

Just A Hint: If you haven't already made your plans for Independence Day, set aside July 3 to catch a rare Southeastern performance by Ohio's Cynics at the fabulous 40 Watt. While a million and one garage bands have formed and broken up since these guys formed in the early 1980s , keep in mind that they were wearing paisley, tight pants and Beatle boots back when people got beaten up for such foolishness. Either way, they rock and who knows when you'll have the chance to catch them again down South.

Local Lyric Of The Week: Jeff Montgomery over at Athensmusic.net got me thinking about Five-Eight this week and, damn, Mike Mantione has written some truly great stuff over the years. So in honor of the idiotic couple skate being performed in the Middle East by President George Bush, Ariel Sharon, Yassar Arafat and Mahmoud Abbas (AKA Abu Mazen), I give you this line from "Stanley" off of Five-Eight's 1997 album Gasolina!: "What makes one man a murderer/ And another man just a jerk?" More than enough said.

Final Notes: First, Get over to www.fairburnroyals.com and download the free EP the Fairburn Royals are giving away; Second, Jomo Entertainment sold out all 800 tickets to their "Jam Cruise 2003" boat trip thingy in 45 minutes, so don't let anyone try to tell you hippies have no money; Third, Be decent to each other.

And that's it for this week, guys. Keep your news coming and I'll be sure to keep up my end of the cycle of violence. Kill 'em all via email to music@flagpole.com, voicemail at 549-2360; via fax at 548-8981; or by post to P.O. Box 1027, Athens, GA 30603.
