The Opener Often Trumps The Headliner: Cloud Recordings' own Circulatory System will be hitting the road with Chicago's The Sea And Cake this spring. Needless to say, audiences around the country will see a stellar show by these Athens heroes and then be lulled into a deep state of despair and listlessness by the increasingly boring Sea And Cake. Even so, we wish them well.
What I Get For Being Adventurous: The show a couple of weeks ago by Kevin Barnes' A Pollinaire Rave, which was supposed to go down at The Caledonia, was canceled by the band on the eve of its U.S. tour. So any other reference you may have read here about that show happening is now rendered false.
Tangerine, Tangerine, Living Reflections From A Dream: Local band Tangerine has been hitting the bricks lately and making some noise. After gigging regularly at Lunch Paper and Tasty World, the band is currently preparing to release its debut album entitled Move. It will be playing Atlanta's Smith's Olde Bar on St. Patrick's Day, so if anyone reading this is venturing into Yuppieville that night, be sure to tell them we said hello.
The Bakery's Alive With the Sound of Music: Athensmusic.net and T'Cakes Bakery and Café (located in the Bottleworks complex on Prince) have banded together to provide Local Listen, listening parties whereby local lovers of music can get a first listen to the talent in town. According to Jeff Montgomery of Athensmusic.net, the parties allow folks "to hear local music in a very chill environment." Food, libations and CDs are available for sale and occasionally artists may swing by and play an impromptu set. The first party is scheduled for Tuesday, February 25 from 7-9 p.m. Featured CDs will include Kitty Snyder's new release My Trips to the Oddities (Pitch-A-Tent) and Grand Fury's Rural Intentions (Horse Power Records). You heard it here, and there, first. [Sarah Lee]

No, It's not Anime: The band Yugami, reportedly a pretty darn good local power rock outfit, has a gig scheduled with Madeline Adams (ex-Sugar Shakers, see story in this issue) on Saturday, February 22 at Tasty World. This show will mark their official release of a CD entitled Sparkle Motion that was recorded recently with the help of Asa Leffer over at Skylab Audio. Bandmember Matthew Rain says that Yugami's "thick wall of music" sound will again be captured on disc sometime in September. Till then, however, you can check the band out at Tasty World on Saturday and in a show planned for sometime in April with The Hiss and Math. [SL]
Still Time For The Hopeful: Ghostmeat Records will be releasing the 6th Annual AthFest CD on May 13, but there is still time for you young bucks to submit a song for consideration. The deadline is February 28 and you can get info on how to submit via AthFest.com or Ghostmeat.com.

White Man's Overbite Award: The recent Bone Thugs ’N Harmony show presented by The Fabulous 40 Watt and Chi Phi Fraternity was an unmitigated guilty pleasure and a total ball. Bone Thugs, who can best be described as Boys 2 Men with an NWA fetish, rocked the house and didn't even appear to be disturbing the legion of people on their cell phones. Many thanks to Rick Poss and everyone else that made this night the blast it was. The show was a benefit and will help the fraternity meet its philanthropy requirements.
Dreaded Nubians In The Chapel: University of Georgia promoters Dreaded Mindz will be hosting another night of talent this month. This time the event is called Nubian Expressions: Now Is The Time. According to organizers this theme is to "encouraging people to act now on their passions - don't wait another day to make your mark on the world" and is the third annual installment by Dreaded Mindz in tribute to Black History Month. The show will happen at the UGA Chapel on Wednesday, February 26 at 7 p.m. If you've never seen a Dreaded Mindz production, all I can say is that they are top notch and wonderful. Best News In A Long Time: Travis Hallenback, from Athens' best punk band Green Bean Go, has sent in the best news I've heard in a while. His website, Archaeologyfrontier.org, has just posted a new song by Green Uvula, which is the project of student Garrett Johnson of Clarke Central High School, and is looking for other bands who want to release an "Internet single." Also, the first performance of the phenomenon known as Home Made Junction occurred back in January and featured around 20 acts, including Low Branches, Wilderness and The Late B.P. Helium, each playing one song each in an Athens apartment. The idea behind Home Made Junction is to "attempt to bring playing music on a sub-underground level (either no or few recordings and no hope of playing shows or no songs and no practice or both)." The next Junction is scheduled for March 28 and if you wanna get in on the action contact Addison Godel at agodel@ummagurau.com.
And I'm out. Off like a prom dress. Get your news to me quickly before it gets stale. Send it, as always, via email to music@flagpole.com, voicemail at 549-2360; via fax at 548-8981; or by post at P.O. Box 1027, Athens, GA 30603.
