Take The A-Train, it's Easier: Remember Centennial Olympic Park? Well, a few folks do and now they're about to crank up their third season of live music, known as "On The Bricks," this summer. The lineup for may looks pretty solid with second-tier national acts (Everclear, Blues Traveler, Better Than Ezra, etc.) but boasts first-tier local acts such as Bain Mattox, The Kevn Kinney Band and The Drive-By Truckers. The series runs from May 30–August 22 and tickets are a mere $3 per show. That's a seriously cheap price folks - though the shows have always been free until now - and you're never, ever going to see George Clinton (who performs August 15) for a lower price. Of special note: the opening night will feature a performance by actor/ singer Jennifer Love Hewitt. I'm so there. Get the rest of the lineup, directions and other stuff via www.onthebricks.com.
Shoulda Stuck With Made Up French Titles: Athens rockers Of Montreal, a band not known for being politically active or particularly politically conscious, has seen their 2002 tour-only album If He Is Protecting Our Nation, Then Who Will Protect Big Oil, Our Children? re-released in timely fashion by UK label Track and Field. The cover art depicts President Bush with a projectile of some sort bursting from his left eye and another drawing shows the commander in chief wearing a shirt and tie, but with no pants. The rumored Clinton-era EP Blowjobs And Balderdash has not yet surfaced. Read more in this issue on p. 22!
Oh, Hell, You Want To Go Out On Tuesday: Tasty World will bring the noise yet again on Tuesday, May 20, when Carrie Nations and Guff share the stage. Carrie Nations have been vital in the house show and small club scene for the past couple of years and Guff is so rarely seen here in Athens that this may be one of the last times to see them before winter hits. Both bands have albums available and either one is a worthy addition to ones collection. Read more on p. 25.
No, The Band Is Garbage Island: Sunday, May 4, saw the opening of the latest show out at The Robert Lowery Gallery in Danielsville. The show, entitled "Self-Destruction = Self Preservation / Self-Preservation = Self-Destruction (Will God Laugh At You?)" features works by many Athens area artists and other interpreting that theme and most notably features work by late-Athenian Patrick Keim. The opening was serenaded appropriately by Athens musical equivalent of tooth extraction Garbage Island. Bandmember and saxophone player Tony Evans has also dropped word that he has joined Tenderness, thereby preventing that band from being a duo its whole life.

I'm Not Laughing. No One Ever Put Me On The Cover Of Anything: The sexiest band in Athens, Paper Lions, are featured as a cover story in the May 2003 issue of industry-apologist magazine Southeast Performer. The band tells their tale of a rocket-propelled history and it's actually quite a well-written piece. As for the rest of the mag, you have to line the birdcage with something don't you?
Eel Pie For Everyone!: Athens darlings The Agenda are finally going to launch their oft-rumored/oft-delayed European tour. The band will be overseas from May 17-June 6 and it looks like the press is gearing up for their arrival. British music paper and hype sheet New Musical Express has flown a photographer in town to shoot the band for a feature story that will run the week of their arrival in England. In much, much odder news, legendary heavy metal magazine Kerrang! is also doing a feature on the band. Here's to hoping they make them all wear codpieces and carry axes or some such shit.
Buy Some Stuff: Just so you know, The Late B.P. Helium has released their new EP Kumquat Mae on Orange Twin Records. Not only is this record cool, the label is one of the best things going in this town and all releases help support their land-preservation project. Check it all out at orangetwin.com
Joe Versus the... Something: Athens snarl rockers ****Volcanic have taken the time to slap together a new album, and it's full of the hard-rockin'-don't-come-a-knockin' tunes the band's known for. Anhedonia is the title of the produced-by-John-Keane disc, and the album's out on Watkinsville's Rut Records. The guys let Flagpole know that you can find this Krakatoan gem at Low Yo-Yo Stuff Records and at Video Library for now, and when they get around to it they'll get some copies to those other downtown rekkid shops. If that's a bust, just get in touch with Rut at 769-4240. [Chris Hassiotis]
Are You Legal Yet? No, to Vote: You think those late-night arguments over beer and popcorn mean anything? Those nights when your girlfriends sit around debating the merits of one band's guitar skills versus another band's incredible saxophone grooves don't mean squat, in the real world. But this does: Start voting in the 2003 Flagpole Athens Music Awards, dangit! We've got every category you can think of and even have one for Best Cover Band. Remember, only vote in the proper category, as ballots with the same band in each category will be tossed faster than the last night's liquor. Ever been to the Flagpole Music Awards show at The Morton Theatre? This year's will be on June 19, and since GWB's proven that history repeats itself, it'll be another show full of musical hijinks. You can vote via the ballot printed in this issue or over at www.flagpole.com. Either way, get it done before June 2, 2003.
That's it for this week, folks. Do something and let me know about it. It's either that or I'm gonna start knocking on doors to dig your news up. Smash the state via email to music@flagpole.com, voicemail at 549-2360; via fax at 548-8981; or by post to P.O. Box 1027, Athens, GA 30603.
