Music News and Gossip

After a long week of bustin' quote moves and keepin' it real, I like to kick back in the lab and jot all this news and info down for all my regular readin' homies. Keep the peace whilst you get your learnin' on.

What The World Needs Now Is More Heros: Eric Friar has kicked down some news our way concerning the Heros Severum website and Skylab Audio. The website has been updated with new MP3s from Heros Severum's album Wonderful Educated Bear. The website has also been revamped and looks a whole lot better than previous versions. The address is herosseverum.com. Also on the news docket is the brand new Skylab Audio website which has all the news you need concerning available equipment, former clients, etc. Skylab is shaping up to be one of the best studio in town for bands on a budget that still require a big-rock sound. Kudos to them. Rock around at skylabaudio.com

The Grass is Always Bluer: There's reportedly a new "scene" at Tasty World on Wednesday nights and fans of old-time, bluegrass and newgrass may want to stop by. Handsaw Productions out of Atlanta has actively been trying to book the swingin' side of country into the club on Wednesday nights. Wednesday, Feb. 12, The Steep Canyon Rangers, former UNC students who have won awards at MerleFest and Rockygrass, will foot-stomp the night away in support of their new album Mr. Taylor's New Home (Bonfire Records, 2002). It may be worth it just to see how the rock club miraculously morphs into your grandaddy's back porch. [Sarah Lee]

Let's Hope That's All He's Filming In His Living Room: Josh Moore, the man behind concert promotion powerhouse Jomo Entertainment, sent word from on high that Robert Randolph & The Family Band have finished up their video that was primarily shot at The Georgia Theatre. The New York-based Randolph, pedal steel virtuoso and live favorite of the New York scene, is also captured in digitized form giving interviews, filmed in Moore's Athens living room, on his electronic press kit which can be seen at robertrandolph.net.

More Of Moore: Yes, two mentions in the same week but this is simply too good to not print. Jomo Entertainment and Jamaica Mi Crazy Restaurant are having a contest in which the winner will be treated to a dinner for two with reggae legends Steel Pulse at the restaurant, an autographed photo by the band, and will be privy to a private sound check by the band. The winner will also get various prizes from Athens area stores, including "smoking accessories." I don't know why since I can't imagine anyone wanting to use them. Especially reggae fans. But anyway, if you want to enter to win all this stuff, head your rickshaw over to Jamaica Mi Crazy Restaurant on Broad Street and give 'em your info. The deadline is February 13.

Can You Picture That?: You may have noticed signs up around town for the band with the self-explanatory moniker the Muppet All-Star Cover Band (a take-off of another band around town that's made a name playing cover songs). Well, the band is no joke. And it's not the new incarnation of the "Furries" craze sweeping the nation's hotel conference rooms. These guys dress up as Kermit, Fozzie and the Swedish Chef and play songs from the Muppet movies and the show that, let's admit it, you'd have to have a heart of stone not to have loved. Remember "Tenderly," "It's Not Easy Being Green," and "The Rainbow Connection?" The UGA students who make up the band will play all these and more at a show at the 40 Watt Club on Thursday, February 13 as a sort of countdown to Valentine's day. Word is there'll be a bubble machine and lots of peace, love and happiness to go around. It's really not that much of anomaly when you think about it. I mean, the Muppets did cover that Buffalo Springfield song in a skit condemning hunting... [SL]

Try It On At Home, Then take It On The Road: The brain behind Athens' pop -tin pan alley-party band Of Montreal, Kevin Barnes, is embarking on a "solo" tour of sorts. (If anyone caught his show recently at The Caledonia then you know what the rest of the country can expect.) Touring under the name of A Pollinaire Rave, Barnes will be joined by his brother David Barnes, the creator of the unmistakable Of Montreal artwork, and Nina Grottland of the Norwegian band Ethnobabes. According to the press release advancing the tour, the show will contain live musical performances, some with prerecorded backing tracks and dialogue which the group will "pantomime," and some live spoken dialogue. In addition to debuting new Of Montreal songs, Barnes, Barnes and Grottland will be performing a theatrical piece that has been described as a parody of a traditional Greek tragedy. If this news floats your boat then see ofmontreal.com for directions to Blue Jay Way.

If It's Good Enough For James Brown, It' s Good Enough For You: Augusta, GA is a little trip down the road, but Athens bands have been playing there for years and, as a former bandmember, I highly recommend it. Augusta audiences are generally a good mix of folks who aren't caught up in any "scene." They just dig music. The latest venue to be hosting several Athens bands is The Soul Bar. A quick visit to its website, Soulbar.com, shows that this place is not only gorgeous, but clean, a detail not to be underestimated, and is really kicking the scene there into high gear. Having hosted, just this past month, shows by David Barbe & The Comas and The Kevn Kinney Band, the owner, who simply goes by Coco, is looking for any and all Athens/Atlanta bands to contact them for gigs. Get the hook up by writing to coco@soulbar.com.

Jerry Was a Soapbox Driver: The Spring Classic Soapbox Race is scheduled for April 18 at Sandy Creek Park and will feature kids' events, food, a rescued animal adopt-a-thon and entertainment (kid-friendly bands may want to give organizers a shout). Teams to compete are needed! Free workshops are available to the intimidated on February 15 and March 15. Sunshine Cycles, @ The Hub, Dixon's and Jittery Joe's all have info packs available to the public, and those interested can also visit www.athenshumanesociety.com for information. Now get out there and make your parents proud by giving technology the finger! [SL]

For Those About Shake A Bone, I Salute You: Just so y'all who don't normally make it down to Boneshakers will know, Dash Productions has been hosting a showcase called Groove Therapy every Thursday night for the past two years. The showcases mainly feature Athens and Atlanta DJs but occasionally a regional DJ will be invited to spin. The music is always different and the upcoming lineups look good. On February 13 they will have Evol Intent, D:RC and Varient. February 20 will see T. Mouse, Nativeoutlander and Scott Britt. And February 27 will feature sets by Hyst and Flooressence. Good job, guys.

Time for me to go chill wit da ladies and get my swerve on. Get in where I fit in via email to music@flagpole.com, voicemail at 549-2360; via fax at 548-8981; or by post at P.O. Box 1027, Athens, GA 30603.
