Local Musician Jon Guthrie Dead at 26
Wrecked Car Found off Beaverdam Road
The body of Jon Guthrie was found Monday evening inside his wrecked Mercedes, according to his father Michael Guthrie. The 26-year-old had been missing since late Saturday night, when he was last seen driving from downtown Athens to a friend's house. It appears that Jon lost control of his vehicle while crossing over a bridge on Beaverdam Road.
Guthrie was an avid musician who played in many bands, perhaps most notably alongside his father and uncle Herb in the acclaimed group The Michael Guthrie Band. He also recently joined the lineup of The Vigilantes of Love and sat in with Guff on bass at the 40 Watt Club last week. Jon started playing music live at the tender age of 13, rocking out in various punk bands. In his short lifetime he was able to tour across the United States and across Europe, playing energetic pop and rock tunes in clubs and festivals both with a band and solo.
He was known as a gentle soul, with a kind and sweet demeanor. He made friends easily, and he will be missed dearly. Funeral arrangements have not yet been confirmed, but we'll post the details here as soon as we learn more.
Friends and family members who would like to share their memories of Jon Guthrie are encouraged to post their comments here or send photos/remembrances to music@flagpole.com for an upcoming tribute.
