Proposed Cuts Would Gut University
Plan Would Deprive UGA of Key Departments, Over 1,400 Jobs.
As part of an effort to deal with the state's disastrous budget shortfall without taking steps to increase tax revenues, Georgia legislators have demanded that the University System of Georgia reduce spending by $300 million for the next fiscal year. The University of Georgia's share of those cuts would amount to about $60 million, and according to a plan made public late Monday, would include shutting down the State Botanical Garden and public radio station WUGA, as well as shedding 1,418 jobs.
