…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Explosions In The Sky, C'est Mortale (Monday, October 15 - 40 Watt Club)
originally published October 10, 2001
...Trail Of Dead issued forth a self-titled release on Trance Syndicate a few years back and followed it with a remarkable collection titled Madonna on Merge Records in 1999. The band recently jumped ship from Merge to ink a deal with Interscope Records. A forthcoming album is already in the can and set for release in early 2002.
"Yep, we're on the Interscope roster now!" exclaims bassist Neil Busch. "We're still totally friends with Merge and everyone. We did really well over in Europe, just going over there to tour a few times. An then some people in the industry started talking about the band being 'hot' or whatever, and all the other guys on their level started to say that, then a few more people higher up start talking, and then suddenly it's a feeding frenzy. It's pretty funny, really."

The Rock*A*Teens, DQE (Friday, October 12 - Caledonia Lounge)
originally published October 10, 2001
The band, tattered but still standing upright, returns to the forefront this month with its sixth platter, an unusually joyful five-song EP (available on compact disc and 10" vinyl) titled Noon Under The Trees (Moodswing). The songs move away from the band's signature reverb-drenched, post-punk rockabilly sound towards one that's more cinematic and spare. The band recorded this one at Atlanta's new Zero Return Studios with engineer/producer Brian Paulson (Polvo, Superchunk, Slint, Jayhawks, etc.) at the helm. The disc hits stores this week just as the band embarks on an East Coast tour.
Since forming in 1994, the R*A*Ts have gone through several significant lineup changes. The current roster includes bassist William Joiner and organist Jeffrey Wiggins - both formerly of local indie-pop act Hard Candy, and Flagpole's own Ballard Lesemann on drums. This seriously gifted band will never get rich on the stadium circuit.

Geoff Achison, FM 1960, Shank (Wednesday, October 10 - Tasty World)
originally published October 10, 2001
Santa Barbara's FM 1960 came into being last year due to rather unusual circumstances. Apparently, the Kinsella Brothers - guitarist Brian and drummer Kevin - up and moved from their Houston home to the West Coast after taking a cell phone call on a Texas beach. The brothers hooked up with bassist Jeff Kranzler to form the Kinsella Band, making a name for themselves in the Santa Barbara scene. Before too long, the band was thrown in, literally, with keyboardist-vocalist Ian Jones after a random encounter, and FM 1960 was born. The end result is a hard-charging, no-frills style of blues-based rock as dry as the desert sands, yet as meaty as the thickest Stevie Ray Vaughan rocker, with plenty of pop hooks to keep one interested.
Local jazz-folk-pop quintet Shank is also on the bill with its recently restructured line-up, and plans on doing a more blues-based set in honor of tonight's visitors. [MT]
