- Wednesday, Oct. 24
-
- ARKADELPHIA
- (40 Watt) Arkadelphia's out of Birmingham, AL, and the trio plays wizened, country-influenced Southern folk-rock, going for a slight twang and a steady beat.
- BALD EAGLE
- (Caledonia) Hot Shoulders is the name of the newest release from this Chapel Hill, and the disc emphasizes the guitar and the drum in a spicy mashup of rock and roll and punk (with vestigial funk accents in there somewhere).
- CAROLINA SHITKICKER
- (Tasty World) This local four-piece tends towards blue-collar rock, not unlike more polished early Uncle Tupelo or the cow-punkier moments of Social Distortion - though sometimes with more twang, fiddle or guitar soloing.
- DON CHAMBERS
- (40 Watt) Chambers' whiskey-soaked bootstomps have the closing-time chic of Tom Waits, sure, but there's a lyrical undercurrent of salvation that's more in line with Johnny Cash or Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous. He's not playing with his full band GOAT tonight, but expect some assistance from the usual suspects.
- DJ KIDD
- (Level) Mixing contemporary dance stuff with upbeat house and electro.

- "KARAOKE"
- (Foxz) Every Wednesday.
- "KARAOKE"
- (Mell's) Every Wednesday.

- LEVI LOWREY & THE COMMUNITY HOUSE BAND
- (Tasty World) Whiskey-soaked Dacula-dweller Levi Lowrey and his band churn out blues-inflected electric stomps, harmonica-wailing sad-sack ballads, and fiddle-bouncing campfire country in roughly equal parts highlighted by honeysuckle sweet harmonies.
- LOOPMASTER JOHN & DAVID WRIGHT
- (Wild Wing Café) Local guitarist John Elliott loops his guitar and covers rap classics like Fat Joe's "Make It Rain" or Mims' "This Is Why I'm Hot," letting college kids engage with hip-hop without really, y'know, engaging with hip-hop. Also expect some Tom Petty, Jack Johnson, Pink Floyd and such.

- PRIME TIME JAZZ

- BRIAN SMITH
- (Casa Mia) Georgia Guitar Quartet member Brian Smith plays classical guitar every Wednesday night at the downtown tapas restaurant. 7:30–10:30 p.m.
- SMOKE FAIRIES
- (40 Watt) The woozy, enchantingly lovelorn sound of the UK's Smoke Fairies is rooted in traditional music, and the haunting vocal harmonies touch on British folk and American Appalachian tunes in a way that should appeal to fans of Athens' own Hope For Agoldensummer, among others.
- SOME ANIMAL
- (Flicker) Local musician and bandleader Roy Coughlin recruits Jamie McGaw (ex-An Epic At Best) on drums, Fritz Gibson (Lake City) on bass and Gabe Vodicka (Long Legged Woman) on guitar as the new lineup of Some Animal, the vehicle for his morose yet optimistic pop songs. 8:30 p.m.

"I think I might end the day playing at Kroger," says Alvanos.
- ARE TOOTH ROADIE FOR SOOTH
- (Little Kings) New band featuring members of Divided Like a Saint's.

- THE SELMANAIRES
- (Caledonia) The Selmanaires hail from Atlanta, where they've been kicking around the scene for several years, making their name as purveyors of intriguing, psychedelicized acoustica. The addition of multi-instrumentalist Mathis Hunter earlier this year has moved the band into a dancier, expansive sound.
- 63 CRAYONS
- (Caledonia) The local band's jumpy, erratic, enthusiastic keyboard pop fits right in while carving its own niche. Slinging out harmonious, chiming and caffeinated psychedelia, the band's newest disc Spoils for Survivors and its jittery haze make Talking Heads comparisons even more likely.

Rex and Near Eastern sounds, last year.

- (40 Watt) Alex Brown Church is the head dude behind Sea Wolf, and the new release Leaves in the River is an autumnal delight, beautiful yet steeped in melancholy. See a review over on p. 31.
- THE TRANSFORMERS
- (Tasty World) Based out of Athens and Knoxville, this new three-piece band favors a New Wave combined with classic '70s guitar rock sort of vibe. A few originals mixed in with diverse covers.
- Tuesday, Oct. 30
-
- A DEATH IN THE FAMILY
- (Transmetropolitan) A Death in the Family is a four-piece thrash assault team based in Melbourne, Australia.
- "A VERY BOWIE HALLOWEEN"
- (Go Bar) Local music fan Paul Wilson, AKA VJ applePaul, hosts tonight's multimedia extravaganza. A screening of the 1983 David Bowie vampire flick The Hunger kicks off at 9 p.m., followed at 11 p.m. by a Bowie look-alike costume contest and a singalong competition called "Bowieoke." A video dance party wraps things up.
- AMERICAN CHEESEBURGER
- (Transmetropolitan) Athens four-piece American Cheeseburger boasts former members of No!, Divorce and Carrie Nations, delivering rapid-fire, loud and aggressive thrash rock in an old-school manner, winning fast fans around town.
- THE BLACK ANGELS
- (40 Watt) Last in town in late 2005 playing drony guitar rock reminiscent of the Jesus and Mary Chain or the Doors, the Black Angels put on a hell of a show and released Passover last year, an intriguingly foggy collection of guitar buzz and heavy percussion.
- THE BROS. MARLER
- (Tasty World) Twin guitar siblings Daniel and Drew Marler perform new compositions and rock, R&B and blues standards as an acoustic duo, although tonight they've brought in guests John Wayne (guitar) and Adam Funk (drums) for the full-band effect. Debut full-length Songs for Pluto available now. 6 p.m.
- CELEBRATION
- (40 Watt) The trio of Katrina Ford (vocals, percussion), Sean Antanaitis (multiple instruments) and David Bergender (drums) plays aggressively transcendent rock and roll, heavy on the emotion and heavy on the heavy. The Modern Tribe is the newest release; see Box.
- CHRIS SCHULTZ & STEPH HAYES
- (Tasty World) Philadelphia musician Steph Hayes spent several years in the pop act Stargazer Lily, but these days focuses on her new band The Good Problems - with Philly songwriter Chris Schulz contributing bass and vocal duties - and her current release Dirty Beauty. Schultz will also perform a set of his tunes with Hayes helping out. 6 p.m.
- DJ ANDY REDRUM
- (Chapel) Atlanta-based deejay playing goth, punk, darkwave and industrial music. Every Tuesday during Chapel's happy hour.
- ELECTRIC DAMN
- (Transmetropolitan) Punk metal band out of Asheville, NC.

- "OPEN MIC NIGHT"
- (Hot Corner Coffee) Every Tuesday, hosted by local songwriter Cortez Garza. 9 p.m.
- PRINCESS THUNDERSTORM
- (Transmetropolitan) Five-piece punk band out of Asheville, NC, heavy on the gang vocals and electrifying guitar onslaught.
- SPINDRIFT
- (40 Watt) Comprising current and former members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Warlocks and other Los Angeles psychedelic veterans, Spindrift plays a cinematic, highly textured bluesy rock that's a little like The Doors covering Ennio Morricone.
- STEADY STATE
- (Transmetropolitan) Florida's Steady State plays boisterous, hyper-charged blue-collar pop-punk, veering more towards the punk side of the equation. Think somewhere between Screeching Weasel and Leatherface.
- STYGIAN APOTHEGM
- (Tasty World) Local four-piece Stygian Apothegm creates heavy-ass stoner-metal in leather pants, drawing on bands like Pantera and Opeth for ideas. The guys should have copies of their recently-recorded demo available.
- "TUESDAY NIGHT JAZZ"
- (Farm 255) Every Tuesday from 7 to 10 p.m., the downtown restaurant features jazz from a revolving cast of regulars.
- Wednesday, Oct. 31
-
- BLING THE CHILDREN BACK HOME
- (Georgia Theatre) Local hip-hop with a strong love of fun and tongue firmly planted in cheek (sometimes); the rap stylings aim for humor, although the music is strongly grooving and based in funk. Expect a full-on spectacle for this Halloween show - the Effie's Club Follies burlesque girls are in on the act, and the band doesn't play that often anymore, so they'll all be going for broke tonight.
- BLOODKIN
- (Georgia Bar) The long-running Athens rock and roll quartet plays a bluesy style of roots-rock music with big guitars and sharply written lyrics. Daniel Hutchens and Eric Carter are the songwriting backbone, working through darkly countrified barroom rock. Last Night Out is 2005's most recent full-band album; Hutchens has a great new acoustic album out called Love Songs For Losers.
- DICTATORTOTS
- (Tasty World) Seemingly outrageously crude, the long-running Athenian chaos cultivators stomp about and trash the night with their beery post-grunge sounds. The band recently turned out an EP called Döömläüt, and the guys' tendency to take things over the top should serve crowds well on Halloween.
- DJ SCORPION, PhD.
- (Level) Local deejay spins a set of industrial and electronic music at this bar's Halloween throw-down.
- DJ SIZZLE
- (Loft) Spinning the dance numbers every Wednesday.
- ENTROPY
- (Farm 255) Frequently accompanied by backup singers, guest percussionists and a horn section, the once-Athenian, now-relocated-to-Atlanta funk-fusion group put out the full-length Live+Rebel+Funk+Love in 2005. The guys spent much of last year hammering away at a new one called Crawl, out now.
- THE ERIC DODD BAND
- (Melting Point) Greensboro, GA singer-songwriter Eric Dodd and his backing band of Tom DuPree and Bill Peters play passionate, driving rock and roll along the Bon Jovi or Candlebox lines.
- GRAND BUFFET
- (40 Watt) Pittsburgh’s rap group Grand Buffet relies on the obvious and the innuendo when crafting its intricate wordplay. Much like locals Fairmount Fair, Grand Buffet came of age in the ’80s and aims for a laugh and an approving nod. SOLD OUT!
- JAY GONZALEZ
- (Kingpins) Nutria keyboardist-vocalist Jay Gonzalez has a gig in town as a "lounge singer" and piano player, playing the standards and covers of pop hits every Wednesday from 8 to 11 p.m.
- "HIP-HOP HOMECOMING: DAY THREE"
- (Diverse Universe) For a rundown of what today's events in the week-long showcase entail, see p. 29.
- KIP JONES
- (WOW Café) Many of Jones' own tunes split between the reflective acoustic territory of Harvest-era Neil Young and the country-infused rock of '80s-era Steve Earle. His newest album is called Downright. Every Wednesday.
- "KARAOKE"
- (Foxz) Every Wednesday.
- "KARAOKE"
- (Mell's) Every Wednesday.
- MGMT
- (40 Watt) Synthy electro band creating infectiously giddy, coke-addled dance music, appropriate for either the big stage or the kitchen floor at a house party. Hank Sullivant, formerly of The Whigs, has been touring with the band lately, so say hi to your hometown boy. SOLD OUT!
- THE MOYUBA DRUM ENSEMBLE
- (Farm 255) This local group - percussionists all, who've played with Grogus, Bling the Children Back Home, Cachaça, Cosmic Charlie, Entropy and more - focuses on trance drumming, drawing on the traditions of Cuba, Haiti and the African diaspora.
- MR. BROWN
- (Chapel) Deejaying indie, underground and old school hip-hop every Wednesday night.
- THE NEW SOUND OF NUMBERS
- (Go Bar) Hannah Jones' band includes numerous E6 luminaries, and delivers quirky, driving rhythms with an optimistic post-punk feel. Kind of like The Raincoats, or The Shaggs with Grace Jones helping out on vocals. Liberty Seeds is the debut album. About to head out on a brief tour with Pylon.
- OF MONTREAL
- (40 Watt) From high-class psychedelic children's pop songs for grown-ups and I'll-never-grow-ups to sweaty electropop for a new dance generation, Kevin Barnes & Co. deliver the tunes new and old. A special Halloween treat for Athens tonight: the band plays from start to finish one of the top-selling albums of all time. SOLD OUT!
- PACKWAY HANDLE BAND
- (Georgia Theatre) Packway's one-mic bluegrass provides sly, hearty original songs and renditions of classic tunes. The local band has a new live EP out called Live in 2006 - Extreme, a follow-up to the 2005 disc (Sinner) You Better Get Ready.
- PRIME TIME JAZZ
- (Porterhouse) Drummer Tony McCutchen, bassist Chris Enghauser and pianist Jim McKillip perform jazz standards for the dinner-and-a-drink set every Wednesday.
- RENEGADE SOUNDSYSTEM
- (Rumor) 311 cover band.
- ROCKINWOOD
- (Tasty World) Five local guys are Rockinwood, a band playing blues-tinged Southern rock about drinking and girls. Tonight's Halloween show sees 'em play a full set as The Misfits.
- THE SHUT-UPS
- (Caledonia) Left to their own devices, the Atlanta/ Athens band produces sounds reminiscent of the Joe Jackson Band, the Paul Collins Beat and the Brains. Tonight's all-covers Halloween show, though, will feature special appearances (read that as local musicians in shoddy but big-hearted costumes) by the following: Neil Diamond, Rod Stewart, Kenny Rogers, Huey Lewis, Billy Idol, Susanna Hoffs and Vicki Peterson, ABBA, Dolly Parton and more!
- 63 CRAYONS
- (Go Bar) The local band's jumpy, erratic, enthusiastic keyboard pop fits right in while carving its own niche. Slinging out harmonious, chiming and caffeinated psychedelia, the band's newest disc Spoils for Survivors and its jittery haze make Talking Heads comparisons even more likely.
- THEOMATARAS
- (Tasty World) Josh Perkins fronts this dramatic, hard-rockin' affair, drawing on bands like Tool, Alice in Chains and Muse. Tonight, though, the band performs a special Halloween set, covering Social Distortion tunes.
- WILLIAM TONKS
- (Georgia Bar) Local musician William Tonks (Workhorses, Barbara Cue, etc.) performs a solo set of his songs on guitar and dobro.
- CHRIS TRAPPER
- (Melting Point) Chris Trapper, lead singer of popular Bostonian band The Push Stars, performs a solo set of songs from his band and his own tunes.
- ZZ TOPLESS
- (Caledonia) Local musicians, including several dudes from pop band Nutria, show that the bearded bands' songs have some serious legs for tonight's Halloween set.
