(40 Watt) With Seattle's Jared Warren (KARP, Tight Bros) on bass and Coady Willis (Murder City Devils, Dead Low Tide) on drums, the duo blasts out crazy-intense punk rock salvation on the debut album Head for the Shallow.
THE BRUNETTES
(Tasty World) Delightfully catchy and anthemically handclappy, this indie-pop band from New Zealand can at times expand to an eight-piece lineup; for this tour, it's around six members. Core duo of Jonathan Bree (vocals, guitar) and Heather Mansfield (vocals, keyboard, clarinet, glockenspiel) released the EP When Ice Met Cream back in 2005, and follow it up with the new Structure & Cosmetics. CASPER & THE COOKIES
(Caledonia) Reminiscent of bands like Talking Heads and the Beatles, local pop-rock superpower Casper & the Cookies plays a diverse set of songs built around one concept: fun. The band's infectious songs have made their way onto the newest album The Optimist's Club, a swinging and deeply layered pop construction.

(Flicker) Last week his brother and Bellyache bandmate Caleb performed a solo show at Flicker; this week, it's Austin Darnell's turn. No word on specifics, though Caleb dipped back into '20s and '30s blues. Austin also raps with the Deaf Judges group under the name Produce Man. 8:30 p.m.

(Little Kings) Local music bring out their new band, falling somewhere between "hillbilly music and alternative rock." The Heathens are vocalist/guitarist Michael Eudy (ex-One Big Eye) - who returned to town and to local music after years away - drummer Bob Fernandez (The Plague, ex-Star Room Boys) and bassist-vocalist Rob Kelleher (ex-Dime Bag). INFECTED MUSHROOM
(Georgia Theatre) The rave-happy, Israeli electronic psy-trance duo of Erez Eizen (also known as I.Zen) and Amit Duvdevani (also known as Duvdev) deliver acid-laced upbeat rhythms, raucous guitars and feverish synths, dipping into trance, hip-hop and drum'n'bass on the new album Vicious Delicious. KIP JONES
(WOW Café) Many of Jones' own tunes split between the reflective acoustic territory of Harvest-era Neil Young and the country-infused rock of '80s-era Steve Earle. His newest album is called Downright. Every Wednesday.

FERRABY LIONHEART
(Tasty World) Born in Nashville and currently residing in L.A.'s Silverlake area, Ferraby Lionheart plays pop music that's lyrically focused, and his self-titled debut EP conjures thoughts of Rufus Wainwright, Elliott Smith and Elton John. Full-length out now.
LOOPMASTER JOHN & DAVID WRIGHT
(Wild Wing Café) Local guitarist John Elliott loops his guitar and covers rap classics like Fat Joe's "Make It Rain" or Mims' "This Is Why I'm Hot," letting the upper-middle class college kids engage with hip-hop without really, y'know, engaging with hip-hop. Also expect some Tom Petty, Jack Johnson, Pink Floyd and such.
MATIAS
(Tasty World) Local singer Nicole Matias plays pretty, delicate and dreamy music with acoustic and electric guitar and airy vocals, a little reminiscent of Azure Ray. Tonight Nate Nelson, and perhaps a few others, accompany.
MELVINS
(40 Watt) The legendary Aberdeen, WA, post-punk band has been going at it for 23 years, and the guys bring another offering of their traditional slow-grind grime rock. The group made its recorded debut 20 years ago with the aptly titled 10 Songs, and has pummeled through albums almost annually, turning out classics like Bullhead, Ozma and Stoner Witch. (This year is the first the band hasn't released an album since 1998.) Last year, Ipecac Records released the newest studio album A Senile Animal. The members of Melvins also spend time with acts like Tomahawk and Fantômas.

(UGA, Georgia Hall) Special Occasion is the hooky sophomore album from Atlanta R&B smooth-talker Bobby Valentino, a frequent guest star on tracks by Ludacris and Lil' Wayne. Valentino's velvety voice presents a come-hither sound highlighting the album's singles, "Turn the Page" and "Anonymous."
ANGI WEST
(Flicker) Orange Thread in a Blue Sea - that's the name of the new disc from Asheville, NC, strong-voiced singer Angi West. It should find a home with fans of mid-tempo, country-influenced piano folk rock. 8:30 p.m.

ABBEY ROAD LIVE!
(40 Watt) Here come the sun kings! The local cover band, with a full horn section this time around, delivers a start-to-finish performance of The Beatles' Abbey Road and may likely toss in another full set of high-energy, mostly later-era Beatles rockers and some post-Beatles Lennon stuff in celebration of his birthday.
BLUE MOUNTAIN
(Tasty World) Husband-wife duo Cary Hudson (guitar, vocals) and Laurie Stirratt (bass, vocals) formed this seminal Americana band in 1991 in Oxford, MS, playing twangy gospel rock but calling it a day back in 2001. The band has reformed for a brief 2007 reunion tour with second drummer Frank Coutch, and is writing new material and prepping for a return to the studio.

(Tasty World) If Springsteen had followed up Nebraska with Georgia, it might've sounded something like Bo Bedingfield's debut album The World is Ending, Show Some Decorum. Bedingfield's been recording some new tunes recently for another release, and tonight he's backed by his crackerjack band of all-star locals.

(Melting Point) Classically-trained violinist Bobby Yang fronts a solid rock band with his frenetic, raw bow work - both planned and improvised. The group plays a mixture of rock standards and originals to showcase Yang's fleet-fingered work.

(No Where Bar) Songwriter and onetime Athens native Trey Boyer (ex-Dimestore) now spends most of his time in Nashville, playing his smartly written folk- and country-inspired rock tunes. He comes back occasionally to town to share his newest compositions, like those off On My Way, the new full-length from the Trey Boyer Band. See Box.

(Georgia Theatre) Intromission, the new release from Berkeley rapper Bukue One, drips with good-times nostalgia, hip-hop orthodoxy and an easy vocal flow.

The Things You Are is the debut album, recorded here in Athens at Chase Park Transduction.

(Caledonia) According to its MySpace page, the new Atlanta duo Sidewalk Relics - Joey Piersante on guitars and vocals, Chris Armistead on drums - mixes "a post-hardcore aesthetic with pop sensibilities." The guys recently recorded a debut EP at DARC.

Sam's Town is the band's sophomore album. The band's playing this last-minute gig as something of a warm-up for an appearance at this weekend's Echo Project festival outside of Atlanta. SOLD OUT!
LANGUAGE ARTS
(Go Bar) Natalie Roberts (bass) and Jamie McGaw (drums) used to play in the Athens-based rock band An Epic At Best, but now they're backing up Augusta's Kurt Garin (guitar, vocals) in Language Arts. Tonight is the Athens debut.

(Caledonia) Mellow, melodic folk rock from Illinois, with wistful and wry lyricism.
PARADE
(Go Bar) Atlanta's Carrie Hodge (vocals, bass, keyboard), Scott Trinh (guitar), Emily Martin (bass, keyboard) and Jason Chamison (drums) play unrestrained but elegantly delicious pop. The 2005 debut album is A Red Button, the followup EP Answer Me expands on that disc's promises.

(Mercury Lounge) Local band playing "straight-ahead jazz, blues and gospel" standards and originals. 8 p.m.
RAUL MALO & THE MAGNIFICENT TRIO
(Melting Point) As main vocalist for the long-running country band The Mavericks, Raul Malo explored a bevy of American sounds. His solo stuff also encompasses numerous genres of American as well as Cuban music. The new album After Hours is a classy, jazz-inflected traipse through some of country's classic tunes; fittingly, the Melting Point's boasting a nightclubby, "cabaret-style seating" arrangement for tonight's show.
THE RINGERS
(Foxz) Current and former members of bands like Tishamingo, Snap! and King Daddy Zeb played Chicago-styled electric blues infused with a whole lotta soul (but minus their longtime frontman Clarence "Big C" Williams).
SIN ROPAS
(Flicker) Playing vaguely deranged, heavily fractured folk-rock, Sin Ropas is the North Carolina duo of Danni Iosello and Tim Hurley. If My Bloody Valentine or Nirvana dipped deeper into the vintage American songbook, it might sound a little like Sin Ropas' distorted take on things. Accompanied tonight by filmmaker Brent Green. 8:30 p.m.
SLOW RUNNER
(Georgia Theatre) South Carolina trio Slow Runner released its debut album No Disassemble in early 2006, and it's a batch of quirky, cinematic lo-fi electronica mixed with high-emotion, piano-based pop rock.

(Alibi) Songwriter Big Don Spurlin used to play guitar and sing in local country band King Cotton; he and the guys have gone their separate ways, and tonight he performs a solo set.
SUBURBAN CAMOFLAUGE
(The Library) Snellville’s Jacob Lehman (guitars, vocals), Michael Ely (bass), Isaac Fletcher (guitars, vocals) and Eric Hodges (drums) all contribute percussion as they play mainstream “alt” rock with passion and energy.
SUMMERBIRDS IN THE CELLAR
(Caledonia) Formerly Floridian, now local, Summerbirds in the Cellar recently recorded the shimmery, driving debut album With The Hands Of The Hunter It All Becomes Dead with Andy LeMaster. The dreamy, rhythmic rock touches on the best of R.E.M., Genesis and a bunch of New Wave stuff. New album out next month.

CAPTAIN SOULARCAT
(Georgia Theatre) Claiming influences from Santana to Paul Simon to The Funky Meters, this Rome, GA, band mixes covers from those artists and adds in a healthy mix of its original jammy hybrids, sounding like mashed-up bluegrass, country and funky Southern rock. Working with a revised lineup, the band's latest album is called Three Rivers Point.

(Go Bar) This Oxford, MS, songwriter just finished cobbling together the A Brush With Velvet EP, a collection of droll, infectious, ukulele-heavy pop numbers owing a serious debt to Magnetic Fields.
DIVIDED LIKE A SAINT'S
(Caledonia) In late 2005, Maryn and Jonathan Vance (Elevado) regrouped their band Divided Like a Saint's and added drummer Russell Brand, a longtime friend and musical collaborator. A new album of the band's unpredictable, off-kilter rock was released last year, and the band relocated to Athens this past spring.

(Melting Point) The Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ frontman mixes the amiable jangle and charm of that band’s earlier work with the more personal, direct type of songwriting that has made his solo releases such highlights. The debut self-titled album from his new band was released in the fall of 2004.

LONG LEGGED WOMAN
(Caledonia) Vaguely drony and mostly noisy, the duo of Gabe Vodicka and Justin Flowers plays music that's half-improvised, half-composed, and any given performance is rarely like the band's last one. The group has expanded to a quartet recently; the newest EP is called Newtown Nights.

(Tasty World) Calling themselves "the best law rock band in the nation," Athens four-piece Mikey Mel & the JDs play punk-influenced power pop, and says "there is a niche market out there of professionals and lawyers and people that like sweet rock'n'roll… they want songs about Space Lawyers, and lawyers having affairs with each other…" Their second album's out this month.

(Georgia Theatre) California's Brett Dennen plays an eloquent and intricate type of acoustic pop, putting his strong vocal phrasing up front on the sophomore album So Much More. It's the sort of thing that's been charming the fans of John Mayer (Dennen opened on Mayer's last tour), and should do the same for those keen on Josh Rouse, Jack Johnson and Paul Simon.

(Georgia Theatre) Last in town about four years ago and playing at the Classic Center, jangly college band Guster's been going at it for about 16 years now. The Boston band broke out in the late '90s with the hit "Fa Fa," prepping any number of college kids for a world of adult-contemporary "rock." The new single's called "Satellite."
