(40 Watt) Creative, ambitious, hypnotic and even dance-conducive noise rock from Atlanta. Experimental niche label Kranky Records recently released the five-piece’s new album Cryptograms; the disc fuses a bit of ’60s pop, layered washes of sound, intriguing rhythms and avant-garde drone. (Kingpins) Nutria keyboardist-vocalist Jay Gonzalez has a gig in town as a "lounge singer" and piano player, playing the standards and covers of pop hits every Wednesday from 8 to 11 p.m.
HEARTLESS BASTARDS
(Tasty World) Singer-guitarist Erika Wennerstrom leads this Ohio blues-rock trio with her vocals recalling Janis Joplin, Patti Smith and Robert Plant and guitar work that quotes Hendrix. The band is rounded out by Kevin Vaugn on drums and Mike Lamping on bass; the distinctive sophomore album is called All This Time.

(WOW Café) Many of Jones’ own tunes split between the reflective acoustic territory of Harvest-era Neil Young and the country-infused rock of ‘80s-era Steve Earle. His newest album is called Downright. Every Wednesday.

(Georgia Theatre) Local performer Nick Light plays with an acoustic guitar and his heart on his sleeve, going for a soulful, emo-lite sound that draws on aspects of Damien Rice, Bright Eyes and Dashboard Confessional. Recently Light celebrated the release of his new album The World Forgetting By the World Forgot.
PAUL McHUGH
(Flicker) Paul McHugh spends most of his time onstage fronting Mother Jackson, the hard-charging, '70s-sounding rock-and-roll band rattling around town for several years. Tonight, however, he's taking the solo approach which should prove essential for those eager to decipher Mother Jackson's lyrics. McHugh says he'll perform some of the band's songs as well as some new solo stuff he's been working on.

(Eastwood Pub) Rough-and-tumble American rock guy Ken Will Morton, former host of the Melting Point's songwriter series, now holds court every Wednesday at the Eastwood with a revolving group of players.

(Tasty World) Cincinnati, OH, band Pearlene - Reuben Glaser (guitar, vocals), Jesse Ebaugh (bass, vocals), Andy Jody (drums, percussion) and Andrew Higley (piano, organ) - play golden-era rock and roll, sounding a lot like the Americana perfected by The Band and then worked over with a heavy psychedelic blues hand. The kickin' new album is called For Western Violence and Brief Sensuality.

(UGA Legion Field) Pop-punk heavyweights The Starting Line head down from Pennsylvania; for almost 10 years, the band has been crafting a sound that snags as much, if not more, from rock bands like U2 rather than from Blink-182 and its ilk. The new one's called Direction.
THE WINTER SOUNDS
(Flicker) Land of No Output is last year's album from this impressively non-stop local band, just back from tour this week. The five-piece creates an strong mix of deft, rhythmic indie rock with vocal flourishes that occasionally touch on emo, exploring a variety of song structures. The new album Porcelain Empire reworks some of those tracks and presents 'em anew. Tonight's show is an acoustic one.

(Melting Point) This local four-piece plays a moody kind of alternative country, incorporating sweet vocal harmonies and steel sounds as well as a rhythm section fluent in jazz. Vocalist-guitarist Lera Lynn's backed by bassist Rob Handley, lap steel guitarist Neal Fountain and drummer Marlon Patton.
BLUES AFFLICTION
(DT's) This new local blues band plays authentic electric blues "in the style of Buddy Guy, with a little Texas feel."
THE CAPTAINS
(Tasty World) Japan's four-piece The Captains carry on the tradition of Group Sounds - the late-'60s Japanese explosion of Beatles- and Ventures-inspired groups - playing pre-psychedelic, edgy garage pop and rock and roll. Last year, The Captains released their fourth album The Rock'n'Roll Frontline, as well as an EP called GS Covers of classic '60s-era tunes.

(40 Watt) Guitarist Jim Willingham handles the frontman stuff, while Eric Harris (drums), Jacob Morris (cello) and Chris Sugiuchi (trombone) work the other stuff. Exuberant, quirky and jolly, Willingham is a well of creativity, and his folk-pop eccentricities always surprise. (Georgia Theatre) The dynamic gospel sounds of Florida's Lee Boys fall squarely in the sacred steel tradition, coming out of the 1930s. The sextet updates the sound with a little funk and R&B (and even hip-hop and country), creating a frenzied and often jaw-dropping spiritual mix.

(Allen's) The Marquee Blues features members of the Michael Guthrie Band and The 60s playing classic British blues-influenced rock like that of Clapton and Cream.

BUNNY CARLOS
(Allen's) Longtime Athenians Doug Pynn (guitar, vocals), Bill Bokas (drums, vocals) and Mike Flynn (bass) used to play as Barking Charlie; after the death of one member and the relocation of another, the guys reformatted but still turn out "rock and roll the way it was meant to be played," says Flynn.
CONTRABAND & NINJABAND
(Georgia Theatre) Recreating the hyper-successful video-game rock event it is becoming known for, local math-rock band Cinemechanica performs a live soundtrack to the classic Nintendo Entertainment System games Contra and Ninja Gaiden as players defeat the games in one play-through. According to the venue, Contraband opens the show, then the band Bronzed Chorus plays, then Ninjaband closes things out.
THE CURL
(Go Bar) More or less dormant for the past two years, four-piece surf-guitar band The Curl (think The Ventures or Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet) returns to play classic songs and some of guitarist Brian Smith's original beach-party compositions. Tonight's show commemorates the Go Bar's eighth birthday, and coincides with a Serge Collective fashion show.
