- (Boar's Head) The local acoustic singer-songwriter is known for his wide-reaching repertoire and regular-guy songwriting, and many of Jones’ own tunes split between the reflective acoustic territory of Harvest-era Neil Young and the country-infused rock of ‘80s-era Steve Earle.

It’s Flagpole’s annual salute to the standouts in local music, with awards voted on by all you tremendously attractive Flagpole readers. - (Tasty World) Local six-piece Blue Flashing Light takes its name from a pretty swell hidden track on an album from the band Travis, and the guys aim for the same Brit-styled emotional rock, though results are decidedly more mainstream-American. More info on p. 33.

- (Georgia Theatre) The frontman of the local group Perpetual Groove performs two sets tonight: the first is a solo set, presenting that band's energetic jams off albums like All This Everything or Sweet Oblivious Antidote in an intimate acoustic format. and peppering in a number of crowd-friendly covers. Expect a crew of "special guests" to join Butler.

- (Boar's Head) Tallahassee, FL, native and current Athens dude Justin Brogdon (ex-Bluestring, Full Black Out) plays acoustic covers and Tom Pettyish originals in his solo sets, aiming for thoughtful lyrics and emotional sounds.
- CHRIS McKAY & THE CRITICAL DARLINGS
- (Tasty World) Drawing equally on ‘80s power-pop like the Cars and earlier stuff like the Kinks, frontman Chris McKay has a sharp lyrical turn for every melodic offering of his bandmates. Lineup changes have expanded the band to a four-piece. More info on p. 33.

- (Mercury Lounge) Guitarist-vocalist Christopher Ingham (ex-Heroic Livers, Colostomy Bag) and drummer-vocalist Laura Swindall play acoustic pop music with a lo-fi aesthetic similar to some of this town's late-90s output. Track down a copy of Stop Apologizing, the duo's debut recording.

- (Little Kings) Featuring heavily finger-picked electric guitars, this new local band draws on classic rock and roll sounds and features a none-too-subtle Dire Straits influence.

- (No Where Bar) This bunch of guys - all current or former UGA music majors - all came up from Milledgeville to play funk-fused rock.

- (Caledonia) Chicago's Owen Ashworth performs under the name Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, working melancholy and raw pop tunes through a unique sensibility. Lately Ashworth has moved beyond the lo-fi-keyboards-only aesthetic, and tonight he's backed by The Donkeys. See p. 30.

- (Caledonia) Local guys Thom Strickland (vocals, guitar) and Jason Jones (drums) make their club debut tonight. "We play a noisy motorik pulse with treated guitar," says Jones. "Here is the Secret Squirrel's description of us: 'Noisy lo-fi boogie smeared over mechanical back-pocket beats.'"

- (Repent) Kansas City band The Sperm plays "shit-kicking nightmare blues and bog chants, with songs like psychic throwing knives of all shapes and sizes. Futuristic rock on an antique radio."

- (Caledonia) On its sweet little EP Best Behavior, this local band combines droll Southern voices with easy-rolling, efficient and uncomplicated indie folk pop about the ups and downs of teenage love. New songs, though, have been getting louder and more rockin', and the band has branched out into different instrumentation.
