ALTER
(Tasty World) Alter is the collaborative effort between mohawked Atlanta musicians Edwin Springer and Ben Morley; playing harsh, aggressive and dark electro, Call it what you will - terror EBM, aggrotech, hellektro - Alter slides right into the electronic/ industrial subgenre.
ANTIBALAS
(Georgia Theatre) Drawing from Nigerian Afrobeat, Southern soul and Latin dance music, this provocative New York ensemble fuses traditions on its diverse fourth album Security. Read Flagpole contributor Phillip Buchan's thoughts on the band, its newest release and its place in music over on p. 31.

GRINGO STAR
(Caledonia) Gritty, energetic and eclectic, the Atlanta band formerly known as A Fir-Ju Well can range from guitar-heavy, psychedelic, Neil Young-leaning stuff to jangly pop songs. With the new name has come a reworking of some songs as well as the introduction of some new tunes; see p. 28 for the lowdown.

(WUOG, 90.5 FM) Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Tonight’s local-band performance: Steve Stevenson & The Steverinos.

MARK WILMOT & WOODY GARRISON
(Foxz) Mark Wilmot and Woody Garrison both play guitar and contribute vocals in the local blues-rock band Samurai Trout; Garrison also handles keyboard duties. Tonight they perform as a duo.
THE MARVELOUS REJECTIONS
(Tasty World Upstairs) After more than a year's absence from the stage, this energetic local band returns with a new lineup to proffer what it calls "urban alternative," blending rock, funk, soul, hip-hop and “lots of other stuff.”
MILLIGAN
(Melting Point) Performing a set of cover songs, reworking both classic rockers and more recent numbers. Every Tuesday.
“OPEN MIC NIGHT”
(DT’s) Every Tuesday.
PHONOGRAPH
(Caledonia) Balancing forays into alt-country with more spacey, shoegaze-influenced sounds. The debut album from the New York five-piece sounds a bit like Wilco collaborating with Lou Reed or Tom Petty.
ARUM RAE
(Georgia Bar) Hailing from Lexington, VA, vocalist-guitarist Arum Rae Valkonen last year released the album Too Young to Sing the Blues. It's a swampy, humid collection steeped in the rollicking roots of vintage rock and roll. Fans of Elvis, Dylan, Waits will be satisfied, as will those keen on jazzier, smokey blues in the vein of Nina Simone (or fusers of both like Eleni Mandell). Free show, 10 p.m.
JACK ROSE
(Flicker) Jack Rose plays steel-stringed acoustic guitar, and blends American blues and folk styles with Eastern and Western elements. Raag Manifestos, his third album, is like a whiskey-soaked trip to India with John Fahey along for the ride. He was last in town about a year ago opening for Mogwai. 8:30 p.m.
NATHAN SHEPPARD
(WOW Wingery) The local acoustic guitarist-harmonicist is known for his emotive singing style and his modern reworkings of classic tunes, from Dylan and Young to Van Morrison. He's performing solo and acoustic every Tuesday at the Five Points chicken wing restaurant. 8:30 p.m.
“TUESDAY NIGHT JAZZ”
(Farm 255) Every Tuesday, 7–10 p.m., the downtown restaurant features jazz from a revolving cast of regulars.
UNAVOX
(Tasty World) Based out of Athens, but making music out in California until a recent relocation home. With Micheal Murray on vocals, Meggan Cooper on backing keys, bass and backing vocals, Steve Fogle on guitar and Reid Rainwater on lead keys, Unavox plays synth-heavy darkwave and industrial rock.
VALENTINE WOLFE
(Tasty World) Self-described as “gothic industrial cabaret,” this duo consists of locals Sarah Black and Bo Ballew.
WAMPUS CAT SCANNERS
(Melting Point Patio) The duo of Susan Staley (Solstice Sisters, "The Hoot") on guitar and vocals and Bill David (Jolly Beggars, McAlpin Brothers) on mandolin and vocals performs an eclectic mix of energetic and swingy bluegrass and country songs. 7 p.m.
Wednesday, Apr. 11
BACKYARD TIRE FIRE
(Georgia Theatre) This soulful, funky and classic Southern rock trio out of Illinois (though briefly based in Athens in 2001-2002) in 2005 released Bar Room Semantics, its sophomore album of lonesome blue-collar bar rock tinged with pedal steel and open acoustics. Vagabonds & Hooligans is the new disc. Benefit for Tennessee's St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
THE COMFIES
(Caledonia) Nashville's The Comfies play rhythmic power-pop in a '70s vein, suggesting a little Superdrag, particularly when they whip out the vocal harmonies layered over muscular guitars. Close to Me is the band's new release.
COQNOIR
(Mercury Lounge) Local electronic trio.
DJ SIZZLE
(Loft) Spinning the dance numbers every Wednesday.
THE FLAMING LIPS
(Classic Center Theatre) Returning to Athens almost precisely four years after their last show here, Oklahoma's favorite psychedelic sons are hot on the heels of increasingly larger and more popular albums and performances. Will the giddy carnival atmosphere of the Lips' recent festival shenanigans translate to the more polite Classic Center Theater? See p. 29.
TINO GARRIDO
(Casa Mia) The main vocalist for Orquesta Grogus focuses on classical guitar music from Venezuela, tonight accompanied by fellow Venezuelan Jaiker Cham (violin, cuatro) and playing Venezuelan waltz, joropo music, Cuban son and flamenco. Every Wednesday at 8 p.m.
THE HELP
(Tasty World) Local guys Jamie Coulter (ex-Red Leader), Dan Orchik (Cooler Heads, ex-Deacon Brody), Jay Tootle (Cooler Heads) and Richard Worthington (Big Gray, ex-Red Leader) present their new band, and rough demos hint at some greasy, twangy country-influenced rock.
“KARAOKE”
(Foxz) Every Wednesday.
“KARAOKE”
(Mell’s) Every Wednesday.
LADYFINGERS
(Tasty World) Singer, pianist and guitarist Adam Weiner performs under the name Ladyfingers, kicking out a smoky, twangy mix of vintage rockabilly, country and blues, sounding a bit like a more stripped-down and energetic Carl Perkins.
LAZER/WÜLF
(40 Watt) This new local art-metal five-piece mixes in prog and more eclectic influences, and last year released its demo album Demo-Lition.
MARSHALL TUCKER BAND
(Georgia Theatre) Originally positioned as one of the holy trinity of Southern rock alongside Skynyrd and the Allmans, the flute-featuring Marshall Tucker Band soldiers on with a reworked lineup. Founding member and main vocalist Doug Gray's now backed by members of Firefall, the Outlaws and Mother's Finest. Benefit for Tennessee's St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
“OPEN JAM”
(DT’s) Bring your instrument and join in. For more information, call 706-208-1474.
PART BEAR

PRIME TIME JAZZ
(Porterhouse) Drummer Tony McCutchen, bassist Chris Enghauser and pianist Jim McKillip perform jazz standards for the dinner-and-a-drink set every Wednesday.
ERIC SALES
(Flicker) For much of the 1980s and '90s, Eric Sales played in the punk and rock groups The Primates, Liquor Cabinet and Buzz Hungry. After steering away from live performance about 10 years ago, he's now returned to the stage with a batch of songs he says draws on everything from Southern gospel to punk and pop. 8:30 p.m.
STARDEATH AND WHITE DWARFS
(Classic Center Theater) Oklahoma band Stardeath and White Dwarfs gets a lot of attention because frontman Dennis Coyne is the nephew of the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne, but the band's worth a listen due to its own brand of stoner-friendly psychedelicized prog-pop. Debut album later this year.
TIMBER
(Caledonia) Last year's full-length album from the local alt-country band is called Dark Heart… Lucky Hand. There've been some lineup shifts in the group recently; should be a rawer presentation of lead singer Daniel Aaron's wistful, fiery country pop.
TWIN POWERS
(Go Bar) Danceable New Wave and Britpop tunes. 10 p.m., every Wednesday.
“UNCORKED & UNPLUGGED”
(Melting Point) Every week, local singer-songwriter Ken Will Morton opens and hosts this new series, which aims to focus on artists proficient in the craft of songwriting. This week: Nashville country singer Amy Loftus, local jam band Another Fiasco and Lefty Hathaway, a local singer-songwriter working in the reggae, blues and soul styles. Every Wednesday, 8 p.m.
THE WINTER SOUNDS
(Caledonia) Land of No Output is last year's album from this impressive, non-stop local band. The five-piece creates a strong mix of deft, rhythmic indie rock with vocal flourishes that occasionally touch on emo, maintaining a coherent identity while exploring a variety of song structures. New full-length Porcelain Empire out in June.
