- (Kingpins) Nutria keyboardist-vocalist Jay Gonzalez has a new gig in town as a "lounge singer" and piano player. "I'll be doing a bunch of '50s and '60s crooner and rock-and-roll stuff, British invasion favorites, '70s AM radio hits, bubblegum classics, some ‘yacht rock’ for the Caledonia crowd and maybe some Sinatra or Bing Crosby.” Every Wednesday, 8–11 p.m.

- (Tasty World) Local performer Nick Light plays with an acoustic guitar and his heart on his sleeve, going for a soulful, emo-lite sound that draws on aspects of Damien Rice, Bright Eyes and Dashboard Confessional. In early 2006, he released his debut album The Absent Parade.

- (The Library) John Strickland (guitar, vocals), Nick Thomas (drums), Will Manelos (guitar) and Rob Smith (bass) play classic and recent rock covers, peppering their set with original songs.

- (Tasty World) The new local duo of Nicole Matias and Seth Alan Bolton combine acoustic and electric guitar with Matias' airy vocals. It's pretty, it's delicate and it's a little reminiscent of Azure Ray; if you're missing that band's presence in town, Matias might scratch that subtle itch.

- (Wild Wing Café) Sheppard is known for his emotive singing style and his modern reworkings of classic tunes, from Dylan and Young to Van Morrison. Tonight he performs solo and acoustic.

- (Caledonia) The new configuration of Jacob Hunt's power-pop band rocks out in ways reminiscent of the Clash and Echo & the Bunnymen. The group was on hiatus for a while, but is back with a new lineup.

- (Melting Point) Every week, local singer-songwriter Ken Will Morton opens and hosts this new series, which aims to focus on artists proficient in the craft of songwriting. This week: solo singer Stephen King of Bart King & the Fair Shakes performs, former Sleepy Horses and current Diamond Center core duo Brandi Goodson & Kyle Harris showcase new songs and songwriter Dana Downs, formerly of Atlanta/ Athens act VietNam, delivers a rare solo set. - (Wild Wing Café) Native Savannahian acoustic guitarist-harmonicist Nathan Sheppard has long been a fixture on the regional folksy singer-songwriter scene; Alex Orange, named after a song on Sheppard's 2001 album Traveling On, is the new full band.
- AROUND THE CAMPFIRE
- (Little Kings) The acoustic duo of Amy Holloway and Chris Allen are from the Athens area, "playing some of your favorite covers and breaking out debut originals."
- ATHENS BOYS CHOIR
- (Little Kings) With the debut album Rhapsody in T out on Daemon Records in 2004, this local duo of Katz and Rocket focused on gender issues and questions of identity. Rocket moved out of town in '05, and Katz, who now tours solo, take center stage. Tonight's performance spotlights the release of the third Boys Choir CD Jockstraps and Unicorns.

- (J.R.'s Baitshack) Sometimes solo, sometimes with a backing band, singer-songwriter Bobby Cool plays acoustic rock.
- DEERHUNTER
- (40 Watt) Creative, ambitious, hypnotic and even dance-conducive noise rock from Atlanta. Experimental niche label Kranky Records recently released the five-piece’s new album Cryptograms; the disc fuses a bit of ’60s pop, layered washes of sound, intriguing rhythms and avant-garde drone.

- (Detour) Mark Bell, AKA DJ 43, spins modern trance, dance and house music every Thursday night.

- (Little Kings) Christopher Ingham of the duo Christopher's Liver selects the tunes after tonight's bands, "spinning soulful breaks with pleasant surprises."

- (Loft) Championing dance favorites every Thursday, Atlanta's DJ Rix favors breakbeat and hip-hop mixes. He recently collaborated with Louisiana's Trace on a mix called The Decade: Trace & Rix.
- DRAKKAR SAUNA
- (Flicker) The Kansas duo of J. “Wallace” Cochran (guitar, vocals) and Jeff Stolz (drums, guitar, harmophone, mandolin, vocals) plays jump blues and old-time country along the lines of Hank Williams, but in a much grimier, contemporary way. Released an album last year on Marriage Records. 8:30 p.m. See Box.
- ECHO CANYON
- (Mercury Lounge) Other-worldly, delicate, untraditional pop and rock, evolving and shifting into instrumental metal power. After a lengthy hiatus, the local trio of Jim Wilson, Chuck Bradburn and Craig Lieske play music that’s experimental and playful, dangerous and demanding. 8 p.m.
- FOLKLORE
- (Detour) The fuzzy pop songs of Jimmy Hughes (Elf Power, Bugs Eat Books) find backing from Jon Croxton, Aaron Jollay, Ian Rickert, Raoul De La Cruz and David Specht. They're fresh back from a national tour, and the band'll play songs off its debut full-length album The Ghost of H.W. Beaverman, out recently.

- (Farm 255) The frontman for Orquesta Grogus focuses on classical guitar music from Venezuela and traditional songs from Cuba and Venezuela (for guitar and voice). Playing a dinner set, 8–10:30 p.m.
- THE GINGER ENVELOPE
- (Flicker) Patrick Carey’s slow-rolling countryish pop is marked by breezy, melodic sounds with chiming acoustic and electric sounds and vocal melodies, rounded out by Jason Robira, Stephen Miller, Matt Stoessel and Jason Trahan. The band has recently wrapped work on its full-length album Edible Orchids, out later this year. 8:30 p.m.

- (Caledonia) A supposedly "stripped-down" version of the rock songs of Steve Grubbs (Dream Girls, ex-Breakheart Beat). Backing up Little Francis will be Scott Dansby (Cobra Sex), Rand Lines (Freeze Tag) and Alex Nackashi (Dream Girls).

- (WUOG, 90.5 FM) Thursdays at 8 p.m. Tonight’s local-band performance: 63 Crayons.
- LONG LEGGED WOMAN
- (40 Watt) Vaguely drony and mostly noisy, the duo of Gabe Vodicka and Justin Flowers plays music that's half improvised, half composed, and any given performance is rarely like the band's last one. The duo recently put out an EP called 1 and is featured on a new Athens noise-music comp, and word is a new EP called Delay 2007 exists.
- LOU BRAINARD PROJECT
- (Repent) Metalheads Brian Neely and gang, based out of the not-very-metal-sounding-at-all Flowery Branch, GA, used to play around town a bunch in 2003 and prior. Tonight, the band's back as a five-piece, kicking out somewhat thrashy, post-hardcore rock.
- MALAMUTE
- (Repent) Formerly known as An End to October, this Mississippi band plays progressive metal punk.
- MY SIAMESE SELF
- (Little Kings) My Siamese Self, fronted by Deb Davis (Hope For AGoldensummer’s multi-instrumentalist), is a three-piece garage punk band based in Atlanta making its second Athens appearance in as many years. Drummer Kat Riederich and Davis used to play together in Jane West and the Lone Star Impalas, and bassist Stacey Singer is the former lead singer of Atlanta’s trashgrass band Shitty Red Drum Kit. If You Please is the self-released EP.
- NANA GRIZOL
- (Detour) Theo Hilton, formerly of DIY punk band Zumm Zumm, performs under the name Nana Grizol backed by members of Hot New Mexicans, Elf Power and Folklore.
- THE NEVER
- (Detour) Chapel Hill's five-piece The Never spent much of 2006 touring in support of its fourth release Antarctica, a storybook album - a full-length CD literally coupled with a fully illustrated storybook by guitarist Noah Smith. The story is centered around a young, naive boy named Paul and his journey to find the owner of a large bomb he finds near his home in the country. The band successfully blends confident indie rock with more charming chamber pop.
- PACKWAY HANDLE BAND
- (Tailgate Station) Packway’s one-mic bluegrass provides sly, hearty original songs and renditions of classic tunes. The band performs tonight at the Women's Council of Realtors Chili Cook-off. The $15 tickets get you music and all-you-can-eat chili, with proceeds benefiting the Athens Area Homeless Shelter. 6–9 p.m.
- PEOPLE NOISE
- (Caledonia) Kentucky's Zeke Buck, formerly of VHS or Beta, and Matt Johnson are the core of People Noise, whose live incarnation features three more musicians playing frenzied early-'90s-styled alternative rock with a lot of intriguing sonic layering on top.
- PSYCHIC HEARTS
- (40 Watt) Guitarist-vocalist Matthew Rain, drummer Carr Chadwick and keyboardist Nico Cashin play voluminous, arresting rock that’s dark and moody but that depends on the anthemic energy fueling what they like to call “heavy New Wave.” The band last year released a new 7", and it draws on Gang of Four, Smashing Pumpkins and Joy Division.
- RAT BABIES
- (Repent) Heavy rock from this Athens trio that got together in early 2006. Members have previously played or currently play in the Ice Caps, Polemic and the Slut Junkies.
- ROBERT RANDOLPH & THE FAMILY BAND
- (Georgia Theatre) Like Sly & the Family Stone and Parliament Funkadelic, Robert Randolph & the Family Band have proven in a short time how universal the splicing of traditional black music and improvisational rock and roll can be; the music incorporates many gospel, funk and R&B fundamentals while layering on frontman Randolph's wry pedal steel.
- UNKNOWN HINSON
- (Tasty World) Vampiric rockabilly and country rock from the strange, campy character Unknown Hinson. Kind of like Redneck GReece, but more, y'know… bloodsucking. Missed his last coupla shows in town? Here's another chance. A screening of a documentary and some episodes of the Adult Swim show "Squidbillies," for which Hinson provides voice talent, precedes the performance.
- VELVETEEN PINK
- (Caledonia) This matching-outfit-clad quartet of funksters from Gainesville, FL, recently relocated to Athens to play electro-based, groove-laden, upbeat stuff in the Stevie Wonder and Jamiroquai style. The band’s debut EP is called Velveteen Pink.

- (Repent) Four-piece street-punk band from Atlanta.

- (Little Kings) Athens songwriter Disha Chhabra (vocals, acoustic guitar) sports robust vocals, and the addition of Vikas Shah (drums), Jason Collier (trumpet) and Aaron Miller (bass, keys, synth) takes things into ephemeral, jazz-influenced and even New Age-y territory.
- A SOFT PERVERSION
- (Tasty World) Leo Ashline (vocals) and Shaun Ringsmuth (guitar, keys) make up the core of this layered, emotive pop group; they recently moved to Athens from Florida and recruited a new backing band. The upcoming release is tentatively titled Imaginary Lovers.
- ABBEY ROAD LIVE!
- (Melting Point) Here come the sun kings! The local cover band delivers a start-to-finish performance of The Beatles’ Abbey Road and may likely toss in another full set of high-energy, mostly later-era Beatles rockers.
- AEGIS OF ATHENA
- (Caledonia) Thundering monster-voiced doom metal from this young group of local guys. Tonight the five-piece releases its new seven-song EP.
- ATTICUS HICKS BAND
- (DT's) With Atticus Hicks on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, the Atticus Hicks Band is drummer Michael Vilardo, bassist Daniel Webster and lead guitarist Paul Willoughby, and they play rock geared towards Dave Matthews and John Mayer fans.
- BEYOND TOMORROW
- (40 Watt) Athens quartet Patrick Hoydar (vocals, guitar), Steve Gagnier (guitar), Phil Goodwin (drums) and Alec Wooden (bass) play pop-savvy emo-rock songs pretty much guaranteed to weaken girls’ knees. The debut album is the self-titled full-length disc Beyond Tomorrow.

- (Detour) Mandy Jane, AKA DJ Repramanda, and Sandice Adina, AKA DJ Sandelous, spin thick dance grooves and add in a twinge of their own campy performance.

- (Little Kings) Instrumental, atmospheric jazz fusion. John Miley (guitar), Darrin Cook (bass), Jamie DeRevere (drums) and guest David Spivey (keys) perform as a quartet tonight. 8 p.m.

- (Mercury Lounge) Jazz pianist Carter McMullen teams up with vocalist Elissa Stevens.

- (J.R.'s Baitshack) Statesboro, GA, band Clean Record plays hard-rock originals as well as covers ranging from '70s classics to modern stuff.
- "COMMITTEE OF VIGILANCE"
- (Little Kings) "Committee of Vigilance" is a musical happening put on by local songwriters Christopher Henderson, Jason Beckham and Spencer Frye. A weekly event for folks to stop by after work, have a drink and listen to these songwriters in the round with occasional special guests. 5:30–7:30 p.m., every Friday.

- (Wild Wing Café) From folk-flavored theological wrestling matches to Latin-flavored love songs, solo guitarist Cook has an effortless approach to his music. About a year ago, Cook released his full-length album We’ve Been Here Before. Acoustic solo tonight.

- (Caledonia) Showy prog-metal five-piece from Burlington, NC. New EP out this summer.

- (The Library) DJ Blaze, who has held down the wheels of steel at The Annex and last summer's "Classic City Hip-Hop," hosts tonight's dance party, mixing contemporary hip-hop with older favorites and some unexpected forays into other genres.

- (Loft) One of The Loft Lounge’s rotating crew of house deejays, Johnny D - whom you may recognize from Atlanta's 95.5 The Beat or South Carolina's Hot 98.1 FM - lays down the new dance sounds, heavy on the hip hop every Friday night.

- (Go Bar) Freaky funk, deep disco, solid soul - it's a cornucopia of classic ass-shakery from the '60s, '70s and '80s that DJ Mahogany provides. Following tonight's "drunken spelling bee."

- (8e’s) Starting at 11 p.m. every Friday and Saturday, local deejay Mark Bell focuses on the dancier sounds of 20 years ago.

- (Rumor) Local deejay Brian Gonzalez, AKA DJRX, plays party tracks both current and old-school; many are his own remixes.

- (Tasty World Upstairs) With Daniel Ray (Let’s Surf, Exit 86) on guitar/ vocals, Jeff Rapier (Donkey Punch) on bass/ vocals, Andy Hollingsworth (Choptop) on guitar and Jason Richardson (Donkey Punch, Exit 86) on drums, The Dumps deliver angular metal licks with lots of dual screaming over slow heavy grooves.

- (Tasty World Upstairs) This non-stop local punk quartet’s most recent disc Engine Trouble harkens back to the Lookout Records sound of about a decade-and-a-half ago, with a sense of fun amidst the noise. The band's been out in California recording an upcoming album; Symphony of Voices should drop in June.

- KINCHAFOONEE COWBOYS
- (Georgia Theatre) These Georgia Theatre favorites dish out the modern country originals and radio hits with ease. The band’s self-titled album is available on Arch Records, and the guys recently released Cowboy Ways: Live at the Georgia Theatre, recorded back in March of ’05.
- LAST NOVEMBER
- (40 Watt) This teenaged North Georgia rock four-piece came to Athens for the first time last October to celebrate the release of the debut album All the Gory Details.
- LAZER/WÜLF
- (Caledonia) This new local art-metal five-piece mixes in prog and more eclectic influences, and last year released its demo album Demo-Lition.
- MAD WHISKEY GRIN
- (Borders) Alternating between six- and 12-string guitar, local musician Frank Williams slides and fingerpicks his way through bluesy and decidedly American sounds. 7 p.m.
- MADHAPPY
- (Farm 255) The duo of Rivka and Mike iLL “puts a hip-hop twist on rock” in the same vein of young Beck, playing bluesy, electro-pop hip-hop. The harmonizing New Jersey duo released the album Feel Good Music… for the Broke Middle Class in 2002.

- (DT's) Light, funk-flavored rock from this local band.
- BAIN MATTOX
- (UGA Herty Field) The multi-instrumental Athens singer-songwriter Bain Mattox and his backing band offer audiences acoustic-based college rock that’s both emotionally direct and emphatically heart-turning. Their sophomore album is called Prizefighter. Mattox's new solo album is called Bird in the Hand. Playing outdoors at noon as part of the "Terry Tunes" series.

- (Little Kings) Bluesy classic rock four-piece from Augusta.
- THE MURDERED
- (Caledonia) Melodramatic Atlanta hardcore metal five-piece that should be the kind of thing fans of As I Lay Dying, Himsa and Converge dig.
- RICK FOWLER & FRIENDS
- (Saving Grace) This semi-acoustic trio includes guitarist Rick Fowler, bassist Michael C. Steele and percussionist Eddie Glikin, and performs blues originals and covers at the restaurant in Comer. 7:30 p.m.
- RUSTWOOD
- (Eastwood Pub) Formerly known as The Husbands, this local trio performs a set of its rootsy, catchy folk-rock and country tunes, usually mixing both acoustic and electric performances.
- SAMURAI TROUT
- (Foxz) Local roots-rock, swamp-boogie band featuring singer-songwriters Mark Wilmot and Woody Garrison and former Dan K Theory members Tommy Jones and Bill Bokas.
- ERIC SKELTON
- (DT's) South Carolina songwriter playing airy acoustic pop in vein a similar to David Gray or Damien Rice. Tonight he's solo, leaving his backing band The Homecoming Kings at home.
- SOUNDS OF SILENCE
- (40 Watt) This local four-piece started out on the local scene by turning out capable Green Day, Collective Soul, Nickelback and Hoobastank covers, but since their start a few years back have evolved into performing their own modern-rock tunes along the same late-’90s lines.
- STYGIAN APOTHEGM
- (Tasty World) Local four-piece Stygian Apothegm creates heavy-ass metal in leather pants, drawing on bands like Pantera and Opeth for ideas.
- THE SUM
- (Sounds & Grounds Coffee House) Locals Felicity Combs (piano, vocals) and Chris Combs (guitar) play easygoing, sincere and upbeat pop songs. The name of their debut EP is Everyone. Sounds & Grounds is located in Building D of the Beech Haven Baptist Church on Atlanta Highway. 7:30 p.m. show.
- THUNDERCHIEF
- (Tasty World Upstairs) “We play classic rock-influenced punk, or punk-influenced classic rock,” say the bandmembers, who last year wrapped recording sessions on a debut album. “Whichever way you wanna look at it.” New vocalist recently added, reportedly moving things more towards the West Coast hardcore sound.
- TIN CUP PROPHETTE
- (UGA\ Herty Field) Local artist Amanda Kapousouz blends genres as she switches instruments, loops her airy vocals and violin around guitar and drums. Last year's debut album is the enchanting Liar and the Thief, and there's also the "unofficial" EP of Celtic tunes Calling the Oceans By Name. Playing outdoors at noon as part of the "Terry Tunes" series.
- WELTERWEIGHT
- (Caledonia) Guitarist-vocalist Greg Harmelink (ex-Kincaid) performs with his backing band - expanded recently from two to four - of Rob Walsh (ex-Kincaid), Ash White, Carolyn McLanahan and Todd Elihu. Talk of an album was in the air for much of last year, and newer material is supposedly more acoustic, slower, gentler. It's a free 6 p.m. happy-hour show today!
- YING YANG TWINS
- (UGA Tate Center Georgia Hall) Whispering their way to stardom, the crunk Atlanta duo of Eric "Kaine" Jackson D'Angelo "D-Roc" Holmes made their name collaborating with Lil Jon and have gone on to numerous high-profile gigs - Bubba Sparxxx, Bonecrusher, Wyclef Jean, etc. The pair's fifth album, Chemically Imbalanced, was released in November. See Box.

- THE AFROMOTIVE
- (Farm 255) The Afromotive is a heavy-swinging nine-piece ensemble out of Asheville, NC. The band plays classic polyrhythmic afrobeat with a nod towards funk and improv, and has an album coming out this spring.
- "BATTLE @ THE LOUNGE"
- (Caledonia) Tonight's hip-hop event features emcee battling from Athens' finest. Registration for rappers starts at 9 p.m., while the music gets going around 10 p.m. and the battling around 11 p.m. Already on the bill are locals Dark Fabled, Elite tha Showstoppa, Southern Poetik Conneckshun and Too Complicated, and tonight's featured performer is Badkat, who celebrates the release of her new mixtape Alternative Mix. DJ Bulldog Purp works the turntables and provides the night's sounds while 2 tha Mathmatikal Radikal hosts.

- (Melting Point) In career spanning four decades, Sam Bush pushed the accepted role of the mandolin and the fiddle to incorporate a seamless blend of bluegrass, rock, jazz and reggae. He founded and led the New Grass Revival, guiding the resurgence of modern hill-country music and collaborating all over the place. His latest release is last year's Laps in Seven.

"The idea is to get to hear all my local favorites one more time… all of those players who have inspired and supported me all these years."
