MY MORNING JACKET
(40 Watt) Since its inception in the late '90s, this Louisville, KY alt-country rock band, has evolved, developing an intensely blistering, rockin' live show that balances against its sometimes more restrained recordings. CROP CIRCLE
(DT's) Atlanta's four-piece Crop Circle plays riffy '90s-styled hard rock, infusing its sound with a little rap influence and funky basslines. It's something that's similar to other bands derivative of Faith No More - stuff like early Incubus, for instance.

THE INFLATABLE ORCHESTRA
(Flicker) Nutria's Jay Gonzalez had this to say last time he played a show under this name: "It'll just be me playing twangy electric and open-tuning acoustic guitars to pre-recorded tracks of mellotron orchestras mixed with rock bass and drums and the odd steel drum here and there. The one thing I've noticed about instrumental music these days is that it goes on too long for my taste, and it's mostly sounds and texture. I'm into the rock and pop and movie-theme instrumentals of the '50s through the '70s, where it's like a pop song without vocals." There's a possibility of some video projection as well. 8:30 p.m.

SHELLSHAG

23 JINX
(Tasty World) This Athens-Atlanta trio, two-thirds of which is comprised of twin brothers, recently released its debut album Curtains and Cannibals, a thrashy, sweaty sort of disc - think Alice in Chains- or Stone Temple Pilots-styled ’90s rock, with a harder edge reminiscent of bands like The Used.

Friday, March 9
DON CHAMBERS
(Caledonia) Local guitarist-banjoist Don Chambers gets a lot of comparisons to Tom Waits, but that doesn’t quite hit the mark. Chambers’ songs have the closing-time chic of Waits, sure, but there’s a dusty undercurrent of sin and salvation that’s more in line with Johnny Cash or Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous. This is a free happy-hour show, with music starting a little after 6 p.m.

KING COTTON

CLAIRE, PAGE, PATRICK, DANIEL & MADELINE

They're fresh back from a national tour, and the band'll play songs off its debut full-length album The Ghost of H.W. Beaverman, out recently.
GEMINI CRICKET
(Caledonia) Started as a duo a year ago, expanded to a trio in the fall and now ballooned to a quartet as of last month, Gemini Cricket plays cute, hand-hewn bedroom pop that's likably comfy and sprinkled with kazoo and accordion.
"THE HOOT"
(Little Kings) Nestled into its wintertime location at Little Kings, the long-running monthly showcase features the prime of the local folk scene, focusing on but not limited to the traditional. Tonight expect a setting reminiscent of an Irish pub as the folksters celebrate Saint Patrick's Day a little early with traditional Irish reels and jigs from Short Road Home, a cappella Irish ballads from Maggie Hunter & Anna Durden (two-thirds of the Solstice Sisters) and Irish tunes on hammered dulcimer and fiddle from The Streetlight Food. Free, 8 p.m.
“KARAOKE”
(Repent) Every Monday.
"KARAOKE"
(Tasty World) Upstairs, hosted by Distaster's Jon Lester. Every Monday.
MANCINO
(Go Bar) Manners Matter is the new disc from Brooklyn's Mancino, an indie-pop trio that should appeal to fans of Beach Boys-style pop: refined, ambitious and harmonious.
MINIVAN
(Tasty World) Seattle's Barry O'Hara and Nathan Ellis-Brown play guitar, drums, banjo and tambourine, creating harmony-heavy, lo-fi indie pop on the new MiniVan album.
OH, NO THEY DIDN'T
(Tasty World) Straightforward rock band from Macon and Athens.
“OPEN MIC NIGHT”
(Eastwood Pub) Every Monday.
PALOMAR
(40 Watt) Endearing and upbeat indie-pop. Their third record, Palomar III: Revenge of Palomar, could’ve had a home on Kindercore if not for the once-local label’s collapse. The ladies (and guy) put out a consistent ray of bouncy sunshine and Guided By Voices-caliber songwriting buttressed by elastic bass and kinetic drumming. All Things, Forests, the new album, is due next week on Misra Records.
JENA PARADIES
(Go Bar) Jena Paradies delivers mixes of the freshest in Berliner techno, electro-house and subsonic soul. Spinning after tonight's band.
REILLY & SOMERVILLE DUO

TIGER SAW
(Caledonia) From melancholy to joyous, the songs of Dylan Metrano’s Tiger Saw swing along with surprising outcome. With Metrano on guitar, Alan Bull on drums, Dan Blakeslee on bass and Angel Deradoorian on accordion, flute, bells and guitar.
YOUR BLACK STAR
(Go Bar) Sound From the Ground, this Louisville, KY, trio's sophomore full-length features thunderdrumming combined with atmospheric guitar textures and strong hooks. Touchstones? Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Fugazi, U2.
Tuesday, March 13
THE CAPITOL YEARS
(40 Watt) This Philadelphia-based pop-rock band was last in Athens in 2004 to support its mighty debut Meet Yr Acres, a casual-cool collection of hungover love songs and rockers inspired by Revolver-era Beatles, Syd Barrett and Big Star. Dance Away the Terror is the new release.
CHRIS MOORE & DENNIS WILLIAMSON
(Farm 255) Chris Moore (ex-Spins) and Dennis Williamson (Adam Payne Band, ex-Spins, Stewart & Winfield) perform as an acoustic duo, sending out smooth, soulful tunes and maybe a cover or two. 8 p.m.
DAN NETTLES TRIO
(Farm 255) Guitarist Dan Nettles, the heart and brain of local jazz expeditioners Kenosha Kid, tonight heads up a trio to present his sounds. 8 p.m.
THE DUMPS
(Tasty World) With Daniel Ray (Let’s Surf, Exit 86) on guitar-vocals, Jeff Rapier (Donkey Punch) on bass-vocals, Andy Hollingsworth (Choptop) on guitar and Jason Richardson (Donkey Punch, Exit 86) on drums, The Dumps deliver angular metal licks with lots of dual screaming over slow heavy grooves.
HAM 1
(Flicker) Guitarist Jim Willingham handles the frontman stuff, while Eric Harris (drums), Jacob Morris (cello), Chris Sugiuchi (trombone) and others join in. Exuberant, quirky and jolly, Willingham is a well of creativity, and his folk-pop eccentricities always surprise. Sophomore album coming soon. 8:30 p.m.
“KARAOKE”
(Eastwood Pub) Every Tuesday, 9 p.m.
“KARAOKE”
(Walker’s Pub) Every Tuesday, 10 p.m.
“KARAOKE”
(Wild Wing Café) Every Tuesday, 10 p.m.
MIWA GEMINI
(Flicker) Country-informed folk with Miwa’s airy and idiosyncratic vocals (which have drawn comparisons to Björk, Nina Simone, Tom Waits and Patsy Cline, among others) and bluesy guitar work, elaborating on a love of Leonard Cohen, Robert Johnson and other porch-type music of the AntiFolk variety. 8:30 p.m.
MOUSER
(40 Watt) Colby Carter (vocals, guitar) and his expanding gang of backing musicians play efficient and exuberant garage-pop songs that suggest a willingness to experiment.
MUSIC HATES YOU
(Tasty World) This brutal metal act has gained the respect of those in town eager to raise a fist against all that troubles them. High energy and higher volume from loudmongers Noah Ray (guitar, vocals), Zaxx Hembree (guitar), Forest Hetland (bass) and Patrick Ferguson (drums). The latest album is the powerful Send More Paramedics.
NANA GRIZOL
(40 Watt) Theo Hilton of DIY punk band Zumm Zumm performs under the name Nana Grizol; no specifics available as to whether tonight's show'll be a solo thing or a full-band performance.

(Loft) Spinning the dance numbers every Wednesday.
JAY GONZALEZ
(Kingpins) Nutria keyboardist-vocalist Jay Gonzalez has a new gig in town as a "lounge singer" and piano player. "I'll be doing a bunch of '50s and '60s crooner and rock-and-roll stuff, British invasion favorites, '70s AM radio hits, bubblegum classics, some ‘yacht rock’ for the Caledonia crowd and maybe some Sinatra or Bing Crosby.” Every Wednesday from 8 to 11 p.m.
CHRISTOPHER HENDERSON
(Tasty World) Athens musician Chris Henderson plays guitar, dobro, mandolin, banjo, melodica, harmonica and more. His self-titled debut was released in early 2006, and Henderson quickly followed it up with the album The Legend of the Oglethorpe County Ghost Truck, And Other Tall Tales.
THE HONORED GUESTS
(Tasty World) Tastes Change is the aptly titled second album from these Chapel Hill rockers, as it delves more into lush but nuanced atmospherics and cleaner sounds than the debut album Iawokeinacityasleep. Slightly reminiscent of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, kinda.
“KARAOKE”
(Foxz) Every Wednesday.
“KARAOKE”
(Mell’s) Every Wednesday.
THE KEITH JACKSON PROJECT

YUKARI YUCCA
