-
- BAXTERSTREET BOYZ
- (283 Bar) Jordan Noel (Love it to Death, ex-Baryshnikov, Breakheart Beat) and his new partner in crime spin danceable indie rock tunes. After tonight's Dream Girls performance.
- BLING THE CHILDREN BACK HOME
- (Georgia Theatre) Local hip-hop with a strong love of fun and tongue firmly planted in cheek (sometimes); the rap stylings aim for humor, although the music is strongly grooving and based in funk. Expect a full-on spectacle for this Halloween show - the Effie's Club Follies burlesque girls are in on the act with their special "Ghouls Gone Wild" show, and the band doesn't play that often anymore, so they'll all be going for broke tonight.
- BLOODKIN
- (Georgia Bar) The long-running Athens rock and roll quartet plays a bluesy style of roots-rock music with big guitars and sharply written lyrics. Daniel Hutchens and Eric Carter are the songwriting backbone, working through darkly countrified barroom rock. Tonight the band will be playing the Rolling Stones' 1978 album Some Girls.
- BRANDON DOUGLAS BAND
- (Wild Wing) Augusta songwriter turnin' out some country and rock numbers.
- "DANIEL JOHNSTON"
- (Little Kings) Various musicians from Vermont, buddies of some Athens players, are in town and will perform the Austin iconoclast's music for tonight's Halloween all-covers blowout.
- "THE DICKS"
- (Little Kings) Jim McHugh and Ben Clack (of Dark Meat and Sweet Teeth), among other local musicians, play the tunes of classic '80s Texas hardcore band The Dicks.
- DICTATORTOTS
- (Tasty World) Seemingly outrageously crude, the long-running Athenian chaos cultivators stomp about and trash the night with their beery post-grunge sounds. The band recently turned out an EP called Döömläüt, and the guys' tendency to take things over the top should serve crowds well on Halloween.
- DJ DIAMONDSTAR HALO
- (Chapel) Local bassist Tommy Salmon (The High Caliber, ex-Trinket) takes over the sound system as he selects the evening’s music.
- DJ ISAAC
- (Detour) Isaac McCalla wraps up a night of Halloween goodness at Detour. He'll go on at 1 a.m., following a drag show, costume contest, an 8 p.m. screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and more!
- DJ REBB
- (Tasty World Upstairs) Usually over at Detour, DJ Rebb plays Top 40, hip-hop, progressive house and other electronic sounds prime for dancing. Tonight's part of the Boo-butante event.
- DJ SCORPION, PhD.
- (Level) Local deejay spins a set of industrial and electronic music for tonight's Halloween party.
- DJ SIZZLE
- (Loft) Spinning the dance numbers every Wednesday.
- DREAM GIRLS
- (283 Bar) Steven Grubbs, Jordan Noel and Alex Nackashi play upbeat garage rock. "We sound like catchy, poppy, early punk rock a la Stiff Little Fingers, Real Kids or early Replacements," says Grubbs. Some Misfits and Damned covers may work their way into the Halloween set.
- ENTROPY
- (Farm 255) Frequently accompanied by backup singers, guest percussionists and a horn section, the once-Athenian, now-relocated-to-Atlanta funk-fusion group puts out the full-length Live+Rebel+Funk+Love in 2005. The guys spent much of last year hammering away at a new one called Crawl, out now.
- THE ERIC DODD BAND
- (Melting Point) Greensboro, GA singer-songwriter Eric Dodd and his backing band of Tom DuPree and Bill Peters play passionate, driving rock and roll along the Bon Jovi or Candlebox lines.
- JAY GONZALEZ
- (Kingpins) Nutria keyboardist-vocalist Jay Gonzalez has a gig in town as a "lounge singer" and piano player, playing the standards and covers of pop hits every Wednesday. This week's show gets going a little earlier (7 p.m.) so Jay can hoof it over to the Caledonia to play in ZZ Topless (see below).
- "GOTHROCK DISCO"
- (Go Bar) Tonight's Halloween dance party takes place at midnight after the bands perform, with the house deejay spinning moody tunes from the likes of Bauhaus, the Cure and more.
- GRAND BUFFET
- (40 Watt) Pittsburgh’s rap group Grand Buffet relies on the obvious and the innuendo when crafting its intricate wordplay. Much like locals Fairmount Fair, Grand Buffet came of age in the ’80s and aims for a laugh and an approving nod. SOLD OUT!
- "HIP-HOP HOMECOMING: DAY THREE"
- (Diverse Universe) Tonight's Halloween-themed event is a pretty loose and open-ended affair; the costume party kicks off at 8 p.m. while performances start an hour later. It's an entirely open-mic situation, so show up to either proffer your own skills or check out those of others. DJ Atlas spins a variety of sounds for the dance party starting at midnight. Part of this week's "Hip-Hop Homecoming" extravaganza.
- IMMUZIKATION
- (Mercury Lounge) Alfredo Lapuz handles electronics and backing vocals for the local party funk band Velveteen Pink (also playing earlier tonight), but he also deejays as Immuzikation, featuring his own grooving remixes.
- JOKER
- (The Library) Locals Jason Norris (vocals), Daniel Binnie (guitar), Mark Crowley (bass) and Ted Lord (drums) blend modern and classic hard rock.
- KIP JONES
- (WOW Café) Many of Jones' own tunes split between the reflective acoustic territory of Harvest-era Neil Young and the country-infused rock of '80s-era Steve Earle. His newest album is called Downright. Every Wednesday.
- "KARAOKE"
- (Foxz) Every Wednesday.
- "KARAOKE"
- (Mell's) Every Wednesday.
- MGMT
- (40 Watt) Synthy electro band creating infectiously giddy, coke-addled glam dance music; the new album Oracular Spectacular is appropriate for either the big stage or the kitchen floor at a house party. Hank Sullivant, formerly of The Whigs, has been touring with the band lately, so say hi to your hometown boy. SOLD OUT!
- "THE MISFITS"
- (Little Kings) Various local musicians from the DIY scene cover Misfits songs.
- "MOLDY PEACHES"
- (Little Kings) The Cars Can Be Blue duo of Becky Brooks and Nate Mitchell (perhaps with some collaborators?) spend Halloween playing the roles of the Moldy Peaches' Kimya Dawson and Adam Green.
- THE MOYUBA DRUM ENSEMBLE
- (Farm 255) This local group - percussionists all, who've played with Grogus, Bling the Children Back Home, Cachaça, Cosmic Charlie, Entropy and more. - focuses on trance drumming, drawing on the traditions of Cuba, Haiti and the African diaspora.
- THE NEW SOUND OF NUMBERS
- (Go Bar) Hannah Jones' band includes numerous E6 luminaries, and delivers quirky, driving rhythms with an optimistic post-punk feel. Kind of like The Raincoats, or The Shaggs with Grace Jones helping out on vocals. Liberty Seeds is the debut album. About to head out on a brief tour with Pylon.
- OF MONTREAL
- (40 Watt) From high-class psychedelic children's pop songs for grown-ups and I'll-never-grow-ups to sweaty electropop for a new dance generation, Kevin Barnes & Co. deliver the tunes new and old. A special Halloween treat for Athens tonight: the band plays from start to finish one of the top-selling albums of all time. SOLD OUT!
- PACKWAY HANDLE BAND
- (Georgia Theatre) Packway's one-mic bluegrass provides sly, hearty original songs and renditions of classic tunes. The local band has a new live EP out called Live in 2006 - Extreme, a follow-up to the 2005 disc (Sinner) You Better Get Ready.
- PRIME TIME JAZZ
- (Porterhouse) Drummer Tony McCutchen, bassist Chris Enghauser and pianist Jim McKillip perform jazz standards for the dinner-and-a-drink set every Wednesday.
- RENEGADE SOUNDSYSTEM
- (Rumor) 311 cover band.
- ROCKINWOOD
- (Tasty World) Five local guys are Rockinwood, a band playing blues-tinged Southern rock about drinking and girls. Tonight's Halloween show sees 'em play a full set as The Misfits.
- THE SHUT-UPS
- (Caledonia) Left to their own devices, the members of this Atlanta/ Athens band produce sounds reminiscent of the Joe Jackson Band, the Paul Collins Beat and the Brains. Tonight's all-covers Halloween show, though, will feature special appearances (read that as local musicians in shoddy but big-hearted costumes) by the following: Neil Diamond, Rod Stewart, Kenny Rogers, Huey Lewis, Billy Idol, Susanna Hoffs and Vicki Peterson, ABBA, Dolly Parton and more!
- 63 CRAYONS
- (Go Bar) The local band's jumpy, erratic, enthusiastic keyboard pop fits right in while carving its own niche. Slinging out harmonious, chiming and caffeinated psychedelia, the band's newest disc Spoils for Survivors and its jittery haze make Talking Heads comparisons even more likely.
- THEOMATARAS
- (Tasty World) Josh Perkins fronts this dramatic, hard-rockin' affair, drawing on bands like Tool, Alice in Chains and Muse. Tonight, though, the band performs a special Halloween set, covering Social Distortion tunes.

- DR. DOG
- (40 Watt) This Philadelphia five-piece plays ragged, shaggy Americana that's catchy, harmony-laden and all-around strong. The scruffily romantic 2004 full-length Easy Beat. The compelling new disc is called We All Belong, and it continues the trend of drawing on '60s Beatles-y pop and '70s rock.
- "HIP-HOP HOMECOMING: DAY FOUR"
- (Little Kings) Tonight's emcee battle event focuses on the tradition of off-the-cuff head-to-head rapping, and the style of tonight's emcees veers more towards the rougher, less polished (though decidedly no less fiery) end of the local spectrum. Among others, you'll find Dirt Reynolds, Big Earl, C-Fre$h [see p. 35 for a review of his recent Self-Made mixtape], Figaro, Elite tha Showstoppa, Ya Boy Brell and Jdown Valmont competing in an event hosted by the combustible Atlanta hype man Fort Knox and Athens' DJ Bulldawg Purp. 9 p.m. Part of this week's "Hip-Hop Homecoming" extravaganza.

- JULIETTE & THE LICKS
- (40 Watt) Four on the Floor is the latest release from Juliette & the Licks; the band's been around for four years and features actress Juliette Lewis on vocals. - THE LOLLIGAGS
- (Caledonia) Leslie Dallion and Ryan Breegle have let this dish simmer for a while; though the four-track Wired Up EP was released earlier this year to much local enthusiasm, the band hasn't played in public yet. - BO BEDINGFIELD & THE WYDELLES
- (Melting Point) If Springsteen had followed up Nebraska with Georgia, it might've sounded something like Bo Bedingfield's debut album The World is Ending, Show Some Decorum. Tonight he's backed by his crackerjack band of all-star locals to celebrate the release of the new EP The Cleargreen.
- BUNNY CARLOS
- (Allen's) Longtime Athenians Doug Pynn (guitar, vocals), Bill Bokas (drums, vocals) and Mike Flynn (bass) used to play as Barking Charlie; after the death of one member and the relocation of another, the guys reformatted but still turn out "rock and roll the way it was meant to be played," says Flynn.

- MUDHONEY
- (40 Watt) Formed almost 20 years ago in Seattle, Mudhoney provided a template for much of the early '90s grunge/ alternative boom. Its rock songs have always borrowed healthily from classic garage-rock and blues, and though original bassist Matt Lukin is no longer on board, the band has been revitalized over the past several years. Tonight's show is the only one in the Southeast on this brief tour; the band's releasing Mud Live, a live album, next week in a super-limited vinyl run, and a new studio album's rumored for early 2008.
- ONE L

- BEARFOOT HOOKERS
- (Georgia Theatre) The rowdy band performs funky, good-humored country on the entertaining sophomore album Life at the Bar, and is the power behind last year's Welcome to Athens: A Drinkin' Town With A Music Problem country drinking-song compilation. Benefit show for AIDS Athens; see p. 37.
- CARL LINDBERG TRIO
- (Farm 255) Jazz bassist Carl Lindberg (Grogus, Squat, Kenosha Kid, etc.) takes the reins for tonight's performance, leading his trio through jazzy renditions of standards, originals and interpretations of some surprising tunes from divergent styles.
- DJ ANDY REDRUM
- (Chapel) Atlanta-based deejay playing goth, punk, darkwave and industrial music. Every Tuesday during Chapel's 7 p.m. happy hour.
- DROMEDARY QUARTET
- (Melting Point) Andrew Reissiger (guitar) and Rob McMaken (dulcimer, guitar, cumbus, mandolin) have performed as the core Dromedary duo for years, taking their eclectic acoustic blend of folk and world music across the globe. Reissiger recently moved to California but has returned for tonight's special show.
- "FACE/OFF"
- (40 Watt) Tonight's all-star show tosses local musicians together randomly (names were drawn out of a hat) into duos. See Box.

- INTI-ILLIMANI
- (Melting Point) Chilean eight-piece band Inti-Illimani comes through town in celebration of its 40th anniversary and its 43rd album Pequeño Mundo. Founded in traditional Latin American roots, the band is heavy on wind instruments and strings and performs Chilean, Argentinean, Brazilian and Mexican tunes, among others. The band is well-known around the world, and though only a few of the original members are in the current roster, the music's no less vital.

- LEVI LOWREY & THE COMMUNITY HOUSE BAND
- (Georgia Theatre) Whiskey-soaked Dacula-dweller Levi Lowrey and his band churn out blues-inflected electric stomps, harmonica-wailing sad-sack ballads, and fiddle-bouncing campfire country in roughly equal parts highlighted by honeysuckle-sweet harmonies. Benefit show for AIDS Athens; see p. 37.

- THE PLANET RIDERS
- (Tasty World) Out of Monroe, GA, come The Planet Riders, The group was originally just the duo of dobro-pedal steel player Mark Van Allen and singer-songwriter Joe Kirkpatrick, but recently added Jere Kirk on drums and Joe Petree on bass. The guys play easy-going American rock in line with acts like The Eagles or The Heartbreakers, with a hint of bluegrass influences.
- BEN SPRAKER
- (Tasty World) Guitarist Ben Spraker's name comes up a lot when local music fans share a few pitchers and argue about Athens talent. As a member of The Shut-Ups, and during his time with Casper & the Cookies and main project Ceiling Fan, he's exhibited both affection for and fluency in classic American pop rock. Tonight's an early solo show at 6 p.m.
- TODD McBRIDE & THE COOLER HEADS
- (Tasty World) Either solo or with his backing band The Cooler Heads, former Dashboard Savior Todd McBride turns out fine roots-rock Americana, with dips into straightahead pub-rocking and more rustic pieces.
- THE AVETT BROS.
- (Georgia Theatre) The three-piece revivalist act, a favorite at the Theatre, mixes of old-time country, bluegrass, pop melodies, folk, rock, honky-tonk and ragtime, but pulls in a modern take on performance energy. The newest of several releases is called The Gleam.

- DJ SIZZLE
- (Loft) Spinning the dance numbers every Wednesday.
- DON CHAMBERS + GOAT
- (Georgia Theatre) Chambers' whiskey-soaked bootstomps have the closing-time chic of Tom Waits, sure, but there's a lyrical undercurrent of salvation that's more in line with Johnny Cash or Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous. The full-band action finds a raucous gang of friends delivering unrivaled Southern Gothic rock.
- EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY
- (Classic Center) Texas-based instrumental post-rock band Explosions in the Sky started out as something of a Mogwai clone, but proved influential enough - and original enough - over its four full-length albums to become a touchstone on its own. The latest release is this year's All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone.
- GEORGIA
- (Tasty World) Laid-back Southern rock's the name of the game for this Atlanta five-piece. The guys go at it like Skynyrd or the Black Crowes, but there's a mellower Mellencamp/ Petty influence at work as well.

- "KARAOKE"
- (Mell's) Every Wednesday.

- PEOPLE NOISE

- THE PHYSICS OF MEANING
- (Caledonia) North Carolina’s The Physics of Meaning represents the musical collaboration between songwriter Daniel Hart (The Polyphonic Spree) and producer Alex Lazara (the prayers and tears of arthur digby sellers). - SMASHING PUMPKINS
- (Classic Center) This trip marks the Smashing Pumpkins’ first full-scale North American tour since 2000, and it's in support of the recently released album Zeitgeist. The lineup's not the seminal Pumpkins from the '90s - main singer-songwriter and guitarist Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin have brought Jeff Schroeder (guitar), Ginger Reyes (bass) and Lisa Harriton (keys) onboard - but the new numbers hold up okay alongside the band's performances of its past epic hits.
